Product Description

CD Description

Recorded in the U.S. in a three-and-a-half day flurry of inspired activity before the band members' visas expired, DISRAELI GEARS continued to present the legendary, unprecedentedrock power-trio acrobatics pioneered by Cream on their debut FRESH CREAM. The acronymic "SWLABR (She Walked Like a Bearded Rainbow)" for instance, featured some of the band's mostfiery instrumental interplay. The album, with its eye-catching day-glo cover, was produced by Felix Pappalardi (who went on to co-found the Cream-inspired Mountain) and once againfeatured collaborations between singer/bassist Jack Bruce and lyric poet Pete Brown. The Top Five hit "Sunshine Of YourLove", however, was written by Brown and Eric Clapton. Thaticonic riff-rocker, along with the slinky, bluesy "Strange Brew", and the mythographic, wah-wah stomper "Tales of BraveUlysses" was a staple of rock radio forever after, making DISRAELI GEARS one of the seminal '60s rock albums. Despite the good humor suggested by the jokey a capella reading of "Mother's Lament", however, all was far from peace and love inthe Cream camp at the time, as internal and external pressures broke up the band by the end of 1968.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the one to get because of the mono mix (and more), 24 April 2008
By Basiledes (North Wales) - See all my reviews
If you're thinking of buying 'Disraeli Gears' this is the one to get. The stereo mix on the first disc is far from satisfactory on most stereo equipment because of the way the drums are presented - much too isolated on the extreme right and too lightweight, with the guitar too isolated on the extreme left; unless you have a system with particularly heavy and tight mid-bass clout, then it's the mono version on the second disc that works best for the 5 most important tracks on the album (Sunshine, Ulysses, We're Going Wrong, Outside Woman Blues and SWLABR) with the drums much heavier and better integrated into the texture, so it has to be this Deluxe Edition as this is the only way of getting the mono mix on CD.
Also on the mono disc you get the live BBC studio versions of all the numbers associated with this album plus 'Politician' 'Sitting on Top of the World' and 'Stepping Out'. These tracks are also found on 'Cream:the BBC Sessions' but here the sound is much improved.
Unfortunately 'Sunshine' from the BBC sessions is not included and so one has to put up with the really bad sound of this track on the earlier album. Why?
But the BBC recordings of 'Tales of brave Ulysses', 'We're Going Wrong'and SWLABR three of their best numbers, are seriously good alternative versions to the ones on 'Gears' and will help to keep your responses fresh. They are very close to the album versions but they are different enough. 'Outside Woman Blues' has an interestingly different guitar solo.
One of the most interesting things is an ur-version of 'Politician' showing it still in the process of creation with provisional lyrics, later rejected, and played much faster. they were obviously having fun on this one.
SWLABR has much more rhythmic vitality than the familiar version and is a lot of fun. The same is true of 'Steppin Out' which is better and faster than the one on Live Cream Vol.2.
In addition, on the first disc, there are some demos of a few other numbers otherwise only available on the over expensive and badly conceived 'Those Were the Days' 3 CD set which doesn't have the mono mix.

But the live albums are more important. See my reviews.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Psychedelia, Disreali Gears, 19 Mar 2009
By Mr. Raedwulf Ingham (Cumbria,England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I only recently discovered the deluxe edition on amazon,as I was browsing Cream's back catalogue. The temptation was too much, I had to buy it!
Already owning the vinyl version, I was familiar with the contents of the standard edition. We are now at a curious time in that we can now get the 'remasters' of the original remasters, and soundwise it shows on this product, the sound has more depth, buffing the individual songs up to a near physical sheen. The extra tracks are very revealing in that they show Cream to have been a very experimental band constantly pushing the bounderies, and most definately a group of equals as opposed to E.C.+ backing group. In fact, on the bonus track'Hey now Princess',Clapton almost sounds like he's struggling to keep up with his more jazz orientated bandmates, obviously happy to go outside of his comfortzone.Cream, due to their phenominal success with songs like'Sunshine of your love'have in later years perhaps been regarded as forefathers of heavy metal, which in itsself is no bad thing from my point of view, but probably doesn't do the band full justice. For anybody wanting a more complete picture and insight into this seminal band,I can't recommend this extended version of Disreali Gears enough, and I therefore award it 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars The quintessential Cream., 9 Nov 2005
By bernie "xyzzy" (Arlington, Texas) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Yes there are other albums and singles that may strike your fancy. But this one is the first to come to mind when mentioning Cream. It is too bad that the samples stop before "Tales Of Brave Ulysses" as each track is unique. Therefore you have to listen to them all to get a more complete picture of this group.

Warning this album is addictive I find my self singing, "Sunshine of Your Love" a little too loud at work and then I hear others completing the words from other cubes.
