REM are world renowned for their tracks such as "losing my religion" and "everybody hurts" but finally I believe they will become better known for this new single LNY.
This song really represents everything that REM want to be seen as. It is a beautiful melody with a political edge to it. Many parts of the song really give the listener a feeling of double meaning. Throughout the song Micheal compares NY to a lover that once was a soul mate but now is changed beyond recognition. Micheal goes on to say that to leave Ny now would be easier than to stay and be left behind. Its no secret that this song is in many ways an attack on increased Governmental nannying and security post the 9/11 attacks.
The song then states that despite NY being changed it will not change him so he is leaving despite loving it. This song is a story within a story within a song and succeeds in retaining REM's unmatched sound without sounding like its come straight from the 80s. LNY is a great song and a must for any fan.
