like a mazzy star that need cheering up, the castanets sound like every bleak songster you've ever known being locked in some remote log cabin with only a banjo, a musical saw and a straight razor for company (and from the sounds of it a really annoying dripping tap). if you've ever loved, lost, or just generally experienced catatonic despair (and if you ain't, you're a liar or you're boring), go check this album out. a weary and wry journey into the american hinterland, this is as disarmingly beautiful as you can imagine and manages to offer a glimpse of salvation from the themes of loss and anguish it deals with. no mean achievement, just don't play it at your little sister's birthday party!
