5.0 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise, 1 Dec 2004
I bought this CD after hearing the 'cello concerto on Classic FM. The listing made me think twice - surely a timpani concerto would be dreadful - but I'd enjoyed the 'cello so much I went ahead and bought it anyway.

Well, I'm glad I did. It's turned out to be one of those sublime moments when the piece that attracted you to a CD turns out not to be the best one on it. The timpani concerto has rapidly found its way into my all-time favourites list.

The performance of both pieces is faultless (just as well really, because there are no other recordings that I could find), and I found the whole thing to be highly invigorating.

5.0 out of 5 stars A resounding success!!! Buy it!, 28 May 2005

I heard the Concerto Fantasy for Two Timpanists live at the Barbican some time back, and wondered if it would ever be recorded. I am very glad that it has been. The result is well worth the wait. Paired with the Concerto for Cello makes this a great example of Philip Glass at his best when composing for an orchestra. Minimalist it certainly is not!
