Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The award-winning flight combat from Oleg Maddox's IL-2 series moves the setting from the Eastern front to the fierce combat of the Pacific theatre. Allied fighters and bombers square off against the notorious air power of the Japanese empire. For the first time, a large variety of British aircraft will be included along with U.S. and Australian planes. Target enemy ships, vehicles, airfields, and a host of AI-controlled aircraft. Re-enact some of the most famous air battles of WWII in places like Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima.

4.0 out of 5 stars So close to five stars, but...., 7 Feb 2005
By A Customer
Let's be honest there are issues with the AI.

Try the first mission flying the RAAF Beaufighter and the whole squadron flies itself into Owen Stanley Mountain Range ! There are others, but I'm not here to nitpick.

What I would say is simply this.

If you have any other titles from the IL2 franchise (as I do), then you will already know how playable the game is, you will already know it is truly beautiful to look at, you will already know that it is very well supported on many affiliated and third party sites.

If Pacific Fighters and the IL2 family are new to you, then you are in for a real treat. As a standalone it is beautifully written/produced, easy to get into and customise for your own preferences (I still switch-off the engine overheat, fuel mixing & prop settings - they really get in the way). Buy it dive in, but always remember the golden rule....

Unless you're flying a Spitfire (Seafire); "Never, never, never try to out-turn a Zero.... Dive, shoot, climb away. Live to fight another day "

Oh and carrier landings.... let the AI do it, trust me on this one !

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent. Totally Immersive, 13 Nov 2004
By John Pimlott (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Totally Immersive!!
I wasn't sure that this would be of much interest to me, but curiosity prevailed... Thankfully! This truly takes combat flight simming to the next level. My only gripe is that there are not enough hours in the day. Pacific Fighters is well worth every penny. Given IL-2's history of support and commitment you really, really do have to buy this one. You KNOW it is going to just get bigger and better with every patch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Initials, Battles to remember, non Pacific Flying!, 4 Feb 2006
Threee years ago I wrote the first review on this site of the then new IL2-Sturmovik flight sim. Since then the popularity of this game, or rather simulation, has soared and the huge and dedicated online community has likewise grown. IL2-FB-AEP-PF is not unique in this respect, but the quality of add-ons, extra campaigns, missions and utilities is impressive. And free for the most part.
As you'll have noted, you'll have to get used to lots of initials (as above, plus AoE, OB, and many more) This is a fair indicator of the somewhat messy nature of installation and upgrading. However the publishers don't seem to be over-greedy with respect to all the extras and the complex development line, so you won't find yourself forking out for extra-and unavoidable-expenses for "platinum edition DVDs" and the like. The complexity reflects real life, like the game itself.

At the time of my first review I reckoned it had taken me three months to begin to learn to fly. Well its three and a half years now, and I reckon I'm getting the hang of it. Not so much a flight sim, more a way of life! I'm a fan of flight sims, but this is the only title that has had me consistently and eagerly awaiting the next release/update/add-on, year in, year out. I believe it'll stay that way for the lifetime of the product line. It's established Oleg Maddox as a presence in the flight sim world and enhanced the reputation of flight sims in general. See other reviews for raving about the quality of gameplay, graphics and sound, they're all true. My point is that this program has made my life a better and more enjoyable to place be. What can you say to that? Oh, and it's helping me learn Russian too!
Oh, by the way, switch the "complex engine management" setting on and you'll soon find your flying easier!
Go for it, see you in the virtual air maybe?
