Having a Ball, 24 Oct 2004
Much the same format as last time, although probably a slight improvement if anything, MTV Headbangers Ball 2 showcases 40 recent rock/metal cuts. The first disc stars established names, and the second is supposed to be up-and-coming acts - though in practice it includes some established extreme metal names (Cradle of Filth, Satyricon, Dimmu Borgir)Sure, there are plenty missing - how about System Of A Down, Dry Kill Logic, Amen, Queens Of The Stone Age, Sepultura, Metallica? As a round up of the last year or so, the only fault I could find would be the old HIM track (why?) Highlights aplenty come from Machine Head, Soulfly, Probot, Fear Factory, Black Label Society and Slipknot. The few I don't like, someone else probably will.

Snapshot of a Scene, 23 Oct 2004
Having recently borrowed this from a mate in the USA, before coming back to England, I can say that this is one fine picture of the currently thriving metal scene. I want to own it!! Soon enough.Anyway, just looking through the artist list should be a recommendation in and of itself.....40 tracks by some of today's finest metal and rock artists.....encompassing as many sub-genres as you could hope to find. Metalcore, post hardcore, black metal, fashioncore(!), even the ludicrously tagged 'math-metal' is here, courtesy of everyone's favourite pyromaniacs Dillinger Escape Plan. If, like me, you don't have the cash to splash out on CDs to sample the band, this double CD is as good as it gets. Personal highlights would be the oft underrated God Forbid with the call to arms track 'Antihero', the utter steamroller vs melody dynamics of KsE on 'Rose of Sharyn', the spastic sound contortions of the aforementioned DEP, and the throwback \m/ TROO-METAL \m/ of 3 Inches of Blood (Judas Priest, watch your leather ;). Everyone will have different faves but I can't see a dud on here, unless you count the overlooking of the almighty Mastodon, who I'm sure will be on the next volume when everyone catches up. So an utterly unmissable 2CD capture of 2004 talent in metal and rock, for the price of 1CD. Go get!
