Lauda's back in the top spot., 1 Oct 2009
Niki Lauda missed out on the world championship in 1976 by just 1 point - but he was hailed as the hero of the season and his achievements were pretty extraordinary considering he missed two races while he recovered from a near fatal accident which left him scarred for life.
1977 saw him set off for the world championship which was nearly his the year before - and to be honest, I think most people at the time were behind him.
The DVD explains how the season got off to an interesting start when history was made by a Wolf car when it was the first new team to win it's first Grand Prix, maybe this wouldn't be another year with Hunt and Lauda left to battle it out between them. Infact neither looked to be strong championship contenders for a good chunk of the season until Lauda managed some better finishes, it would eventually be his ability to score points even when he wasn't winning which won him the driver's championship.
One thing the narrator of this DVD points out, are some of the technical and safety developments present in the car. The footage from the sidelines demonstrates the new comms system for speaking to the drivers and we see the marshals carrying out safety checks by testing height of the roll loop bhind the driver's heads. Within moments of this though we see the death of Tom Price and a steward in one of Formula 1's most sickeningly awful accidents. Thankfully the moment of impact and the mess made of the steward is blurred out.
By the late '70s The sport was becoming more popular and was getting more media coverage. Bernie Ecclestone was to begin his massive influence on the sport when instead of just being Brabham manager, he started to negotiate TV rights for the sport.
Speaking of TV coverage, there doesn't seem to be as much for this race. Instead we get the usual amateur film but the cameraman seems to have upgraded his equipment and the footage, though not as good as the previous DVD in the series, it still better than the first few.
In a nutshell: A season which introduced many advances in technology including turbo-charged cars - which would eventually become synonymous with the sport (until it was banned!). The 1977 season was tinged with tragedy, but it also saw Lauda ride the crest of a wave of public support and take a championship many thought he deserved in 1976. He'd already signed to leave Ferrari at the end of the year and the following season would see his seat occupied by a new driver in '77 - Gilles Villeneuve. The DVD brings all this with limited footage, it's certainly not the strongest DVD of the collection, but it's still a good way to see the sights of the season and get an idea of the drama.

Way over-priced!, 9 Oct 2008
Bluntly, this DVD is VERY poorly edited, put together, and the commentator is absolutely useless, and even sounds bored!
As an F1 fan of many years this is better than nothing and what you do see is good, just that you don't see much action!
This could have, and should have, been so much better than it actually is. I too own quite a few in this series - it is the only way to see F1 from these years - but for what you get, it is definitely over-priced.

Lauda "the rat" does it again, A genuis of a driver!, 25 Jun 2007
I own many of these titles from the Brunswick archives and I am mostly pleased to have them, they are the only way to see the formula one scene as it was from 1970 to 1980. In many ways I feel that formula one was better in this period for out and out racing, wheel to wheel action and before money rules and sponsors took away many of the reasons why we watched formula one in the first place, action!. These DVD's however are frustrating beyond belief as no actual real racing action is captured on them as Brunswick only use there own footage taken often from one corner on the track and it shows, painfully badly. Nothing worse than watching the drivers put on their helmets for five minutes, sit on the start line waiting for the lights, only for the picture to pause and the announcer to say "And lauda won the race" So where was the race, let me see it, please !!! While races are omitted there is also the totally dreadful der, der, der, der der, der der der der music as the results are being shown, trust me it drives you mad, it will have you screaming for the remote to turn it down. Why cant they use TV footage, lets have a BBC Grand Prix style DVD using their own footage. In summary, its great to see the old drivers (many no longer with us sadly) and reminisce, but these DVD's are poor for any real race action, but its great to see Niki Lauda and his Ferrari, I am a big Lauda fan, his comeback in 76 to win the season in 77 after that dreadful accident is the stuff of pure legends. Awesome!
