Synopsis

This television production stars Goran Visnjic (ER) as the titular gladiator in this television adaptation of the same 1951 Howard Fast novel that spawned Stanley Kubrick's 1960 film classic. While living out his life as a slave the deserts of Egypt, Spartacus is bought by a trainer of gladiators and forced to fight for the amusement of the Roman masses. There, he spearheads a slave uprising which rocks the very foundations of Rome. Alan Bates co-stars as Lentulas Agrippa in his final screen role.

I viewed this film initially with some trepidation, used as I was to the Kirk Douglas version. I was,however,pleasantly surprised.

Goran Visnjiic is no Kirk Douglas, but his performance grew on me and his interplay with Varinia (Rhona Mitra) was at least the equal of that in the earlier film. It was less of a "film star" performance, and overall I feel that this was the strength of this film, as the stars did not seem to be trying to outdo each other as Olivier and Laughton did.

Again Angus McFadden is not Olivier, and of the principals he was the one I was least impressed with; there seemed some inconsistencies in his interpretation. Perhaps he was just relieved at not having to seduce Tony Curtis (another plus was that we were also spared a Curtis type song!). Batiatus is also a bit of a non-event when compared with Peter Ustinov

Alan Bates turned in an impressive performance as Agrippa, an initially powerful man slowly realising that his Rome has changed for the worse.

The history is better than the original, too, including the building of Crassus' retaining wall to attempt to trap the slaves near the coast.

On the downside, the arena and battle scenes can't compare with the likes of "Gladiator".

Not a classic, but still worth a viewing if you like the period and want to see a non-Hollywood version of the story.

Although this film is a bit slow to get started, once the slaves break free the pace quickens up consierably. The battle scenes are excelent, and the plot easy to follow and understand.
It shows the problems Spartacus faced with his other generals wanting to make the Romans slaves, but this might not be true. Apart from a few minor historical innacuracies the film is superb. A great film to watch, but it will take up a lot of time.

My partner saw Mr Visnjic on ER, and went gooey. Safe in the assumption that she's never likely to meet him (steer clear Goran, or I'll have you), I ordered this flick.

Let's be clear - it's nowhere near as good as the original Kirk Douglas/Tony Curtis/Lawrence Olivier effort, but it was never going to be with 'him off ER' and 'that bloke off of Eastenders' as the star attractions. If you are stuck trying to choose which one to buy... well, you shouldn't be.

That said, it's enjoyable if you like that sort of thing. Have a look at the cover, it tells you everthing you need to know. The acting isn't terrible, the script isn't too bad, and Goran spends quite a bit of time with his top off, which is sure to please the audience that this was no doubt aimed at. So, if you're in that audience, or you know someone who is, it's not going to break the bank, and it shouldn't reduce you to tears of boredom.
