Synopsis
This is a 4-Disc box set showcasing the best of Ealing comedy.
WHISKY GALORE! tells the story of an island in the Hebrides called Todday. World War II hits the islands inhabitants hard when the local supply of whisky runs out! When a ship wrecks containing 50,000 cases of whisky the locals conspire against the home guard to get it back.
THE MAGGIE tells the story of a tugboat skipper who tricks a wealthy American into entrusting him to ship valuable cargo. Once he realises what has happened the crew of The Maggie must outwit the American in order to keep the contract.
CHAMPAGNE CHARLIE takes place in the gas-lit London of the 1860s, an aspiring singer gets his break when he changes his name to George Leybourne and sings drinking songs.
IT ALWAYS RAINS ON A SUNDAY tells the story of a housewife, Rose, whose otherwise ordinary Sunday is changed when an ex-lover appears seeking protection, as he is now an escaped convict. As well as living with a husband and children, Rose also has to secretly protect the convict. Riveting Ealing drama.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wily Scottish captain of old steamer cons a rich American!, 21 Aug 2005
I purchased this title to obtain The Maggie often referred to as a lesser Ealing comedy. This is an opinion that has always puzzled me, but I guess in some eyes it must have substance if you compare how often Passport to Pimlico, Kind hearts And Coronets or Whiskey Galore for that matter are trotted out on television by way of comparison. How many Ealing TV seasons have included The Maggie? In brief, the wily Scottish captain of a tired old steamer called The Maggie cons a rich American into letting his crew transport expensive furniture to a remote Scottish island. Sounds like a classic recipe for Ealing fun and it is! Whiskey Galore requires no introduction and the box set is worth the asking price for these two gems alone, of the other titles It always rains on a Sunday made in 1947 is a fairly grim reminder of just how harsh life was in post war London. The story revolves around an escaped convict and a woman torn between her not so cosy east end life and her passion for the escapee and one time fiancé. Its fun spotting some of cast from Pimlico and other films, turning their hands to more earthy roles as part of the criminal underbelly of dear old London, and without spoiling it for you the ending is both grim and quite gripping. Champagne Charlie is OK and has it moments, the spiralling competition between two vaudeville rivals and their search for the finest drinking song is very funny and eventually leads to a pistol dual. It's a good film, and if British Music Hall humour is your thing (it's not mine) it will keep you amused for its full 100 min length, however it did feel slightly over long by comparison with the other titles and there is a segment in the middle of about 20 min's where the singing seems to be never ending. All in all a fine set to be enjoyed on a Sunday afternoon after the roast is beginning to settle. I treated 3 of the films as a bonus after soaking up The Maggie for the 1st time in years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tommy Kearins revisited., 2 Jul 2006

Myself and countless others will agree, that our Scottish humour is timeless. this dvd has a fabulous wealth of entertainment in one box. With Ealings unique style, you will be transported into each storyline head first. you will enjoy film after film. Truly a fantastic package. For me "The Maggie" stands out as my all time favourite. Of course it could'nt be any other way, as Tommy Kearins, my name sake is my father. Again proving that generations down the line are still enjoing Ealing movies, as are my children.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Maggie, 17 Sep 2005
By AlanMusicMan (Salisbury UK) - See all my reviews

I can't add much more than the previous reviews. A great set of films. A previously noted, The Maggie is NOT a minor Ealing comedy. I think it stands up a lot better than many of the others and should rightly be placed in the first rank.

One or two notes:

The American's prissey "man on the ground" Mr Pusey, is played by Hubert Gregg - who later had a long Radio Career as a presenter on BBC Radio 2 UK.

The characters and story in "The Maggie" owe a very great deal to Neil Munro's Para Handy tales (see the Gregor Fischer series of these made by the BBC in the mid 1990s). Also, the 1980s film "Local Hero" inherited a some ideas from this movie - especially in respect of hypertense city slickers being taught a thing or two about living by simple country folks.

Many of the exterior scenes were filmed on the Isle of Isley - located off the Scottish mainland coast.
