This budget-priced eight CD set is great value and will be most appreciated by Furtwangler afficionados. Concerts from 1949-54 are documented, in good sound and well remastered. Booklet notes are interesting, but no sung texts.

Rareties are the Pfitzner, Stravinsky (S3M) and Hindemith (DHW) symphonies. All are worth hearing, though I was least taken with Die harmonie der Welt. Big-band Bach Brandenburgs will offend the purists, but Furt's piano playing in No.5 is hypnotic. A buoyent, poetic, shimmering Hebrides overture precedes a spelbinding rendition of Mahler's Wayfarer songs with Fischer-Dieskau. Furtwangler's Bruckner Five is frenetic, the peroration resembling the Charge of the Light Brigade; his Don Juan more relaxed; His Brahms Fourth harrowing and physically intense, incomparable.

The Eroica is impressively done, as is the Ninth, although some would say there are even greater performances by the maestro available. Rather annoyingly, Schubert's Great C Major is listed as the Eighth Symphony, deceiving me at the moment of purchase. Doubly-annoying is the fact this is a noisy studio effort from Vienna, no match for the storming Berlin wartime performance. To end on a positive note, Beethoven's Seventh and Eighth Symphonies, and the Great Fugue, make up the programme for what was Furtwangler's last ever VPO concert in August 1954. No.7 and the fugue are especially good.


These post-war records are rather easier on the ear than some of the wartime broadcasts. There may be even more stupendous accounts of some of these symphonies, but none so affordably priced or so conveniently available. Cordially recommended.
