This review is from: Studio One Funk (Audio CD)
Soul Jazz's attempt to stuff a bunch of Studio One tracks into the funk genre sees them trying a bit too hard - there are only a couple of tracks that could unequivocally be described as funk, notably the superb Now by Lee Arab, which retains a tiny hint of reggae and that unmistakeable Studio One sound to let you know it's Jamaican not American. Several tracks can be fairly described as funky reggae, which is fair enough, but many others just make you wonder what the compiler was thinking when putting this compilation together - 007 (no James Bond connection, nor Desmond Dekker) is a (pretty decent) late ska instrumental, Skylarking is a sax cut of the Horace Andy song, etc. etc. Another problem is that some of the most notable outright funk tracks laid down at Studio One (Greedy G, Granny Scratch Scratch) have appeared on other Soul Jazz compilations and they seem (laudably) reluctant to use tracks on more than one album.

But having said all that, although this is nowhere near the best of Soul Jazz's ever increasing Studio One series, there's still much to like here even if the selection is a bit random and fans of Studio One will not want to miss out.
