Album Description
After his best-selling Bach Goldberg Variations - which figured high in many classical charts worldwide - András Schiff turns to Ludwig van Beethoven's complete works for piano and cello, in a striking and highly distinguished recording with Miklós Perényi.
The works offer deep insight into Beethoven's creative life, for he wrote for this combination in each phase of his artistic development. Opus 5/1 and 5/2 belong to the first, "classical" period when he was developing his own compositional style, breaking free of the influence of Haydn and Mozart. Opus 69 belongs to the so-called "heroic" period and Opus 102 to the final, "spiritual" period. The set also includes the rarely played, early Horn Sonata, Op 17 - Beethoven subsequently revised the horn part for cello - and the three sets of Variations.
Schiff plays brilliantly (selecting a Bösendorfer as appropriate for this music) and fellow Hungarian Perényi (heard on ECM's prize-winning Kurtág/Musik für Stretchinstrumente) is a perfect partner. They are agreed on the question of emphasis: though colloquially referred to as the 'Cello Sonatas', these are properly works for piano and cello.
