Synopsis

Thomas Magnum (Tom Selleck) is a Private Investigator who works as part of a security team in the palatial mansion of millionaire businessman Robin Masters. Using his luxurious surroundings as his base, Magnum runs a daily battle with various criminals as he seeks to track them down and report their illicit activities. However, he also faces a constant battle with the caretaker of Masters' estate, Jonathan Higgins (John Hillerman), particularly when Magnum zooms off in the 308 GTS Ferrari that has been left at his disposal! It all adds up to an action packed show from the early 1980s that manages to capture much of the fashion and excesses of the decade. This release presents the first season in its entirety, with Selleck masterful as the moustachioed P.I. throughout!

Magnum Pi is the best tv show of the eighties, and Selleck was perfect as the moustache wearing PI. Together with Higgins, Rick and TC he beat the bad guys in the beautiful setting of Hawaii. What made the show work was the fact that you as the audience just knows that Selleck is just as nice as his character of Magnum, and that makes for very comfortable viewing. The dvd has every episode of the first season, all looking very good thanks to dvd quality. One thing Magnum fans must be aware of though is that the region 1 version (American release) has bonus episodes from future seasons, including the Simon and Simon episode. The region 2 version for the UK has just the episodes from season 1. And so it is probably best to get region 1 if your player can play them.

All in all a first class release, however a Selleck commentary would have been bliss. Oh well...

I have this box set and although Amazon doesn't mention it, all episodes of series 1 have English subtitles.

Growing up in the 80's, Magnum P.I. was one of my absolute favourite shows. The show is still as great as I remembered and hasn't dated like many of its contemporaries. Magnum P.I. has got action, suspense, buddy humour and fantastic locations in Hawaii. I highly recommend. The only disappointment is the lack of any extras; an interview or two would have been nice.
