Amazon.co.uk Review

"One man can make a difference," intones a dying millionaire--well, one man and a superduper car, backed with millions of dollars! Welcome to the deliciously ridiculous world of Knight Rider, the early '80s TV series that launched the career of David Hasselhoff and his magnificent coif (both later seen in the insanely popular Baywatch). After being shot in the face, detective Michael Long is revived as Michael Knight (Hasselhoff) and partnered with an indestructible talking car called K.I.T.T. (voiced by William Daniels). The duo travel around the country solving crimes--basically, it's The Lone Ranger with the car as Silver and Tonto combined. Supported by finicky British executive Devon Myles (Edward Mulhare, actually an Irishman) and sexy engineer Bonnie Barstow (Patricia McPherson), Knight and K.I.T.T. take on everything from motorcycle gangs to corporate crooks to K.I.T.T.'s own evil twin, K.A.R.R.

Like any good cheese, Knight Rider has only grown more pungent with age. Decked out in alarming '80s fashions (check out that blue Members Only jacket in the pilot), earnestly spouting some of the worst dialogue in the history of television, the absurdly handsome Hasselhoff radiates the unique charisma that's made him a cult figure in Germany. In addition to the 21 episodes of the first season, Knight Rider: Season One includes a 1991 TV movie, Knight Rider 2000, that tried to launch a revamped series set in the near future (lacking the cheerful touch of creator Glen Larson, the attempt sank into oblivion) and brief interview footage (including Hasselhoff describing when he read the original script: "It was glowing in my hands. This was gold.") It's unlikely this boxed set will appeal to anyone who didn't become a fan of the show at an impressionable age, but for those fans, Knight Rider: Season One is gold. --Bret Fetzer

Synopsis

In one of the most influential action series of the 1980s, Michael Knight (the incomparable David Hasselhoff) and his trusty, super intelligent car KITT (voiced by William Daniels) work for the Foundation for Law and Government (FLAG). Wealthy Wilton Knight put a great deal of his fortune into the development of FLAG, now run by Devon Miles, and the result of his efforts is KITT, an artificially intelligent car created to bring justice to the city. With KITT ready to go, FLAG lacks only a driver, but seizes the opportunity to turn Michael Arthur Long, a young cop, believed to be murdered, into Michael Knight, crime fighter extraordinaire. With a surgically altered face and unlimited resources, Michael, KITT, and technician Bonnie Bars tow roam the city restoring order and protecting the innocent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Only the best DVD of the year-Knight Rider - Series 1, 13 Sep 2004
By A Customer
Since I have been an avid Knight Rider fanatic since I was six years old, I picked up the first season DVD boxed set on release day. I have to say, I am very impressed. You might expect a $40 set of DVDs from a campy '80s TV show to be equally campy in their presentation (think Columbia House's own Knight Rider DVD knockoffs), but you'd be wrong. This is a top-quality set. There's a good number of cool extras, the menus and navigation are fantastic, and the video and sound quality of the episodes themselves are astounding. Knight Rider DVDs are finally here, and to my great relief, they did them RIGHT.

The four discs in this set are double-sided, so the publishers were able to save money on the cost of printing discs, keeping the price of the set low. Points to them for that. When you first load up a disc, the unforgettable KR theme music starts and your options are provided in a cool, perspective-shifted layout that has an effect like KITT's scanner behind it. Once you choose which of the episodes you want to watch (there are four episodes per side of each disc), you are presented with a brief synopsis, original air date, and a still image before you dive in. This is GREAT. I'm also a Star Trek fan, and I have to say that Paramount's menus and navigations on the TNG and Voyager DVDs are horrendous compared to this. Knight Rider has got the kind of DVD menus that all DVDs should have. Animated, colorful, yet still very fast to navigate through and full of all the information you need.

Visually, the episodes look stunning. Both the audio and video tracks have been remastered, and all of KITT's electronics, glossy black paint and Michael's goofy grins are more sharp and clear than they've ever been, even in 1982. The sound track is unbelievable. Occasionally the sound quality is so good, I wonder if they've actually dubbed in new foley in places. But I think that's just a trick of the ears, as all of the effect seem to be original, they just sound...BETTER. The mixing is perfect, too. And the best part? They didn't screw around with anything, change any content, cut anything out, or fix any bloopers. It's just classic Knight Rider, complete and uncut, and totally "un-fooled-around with." These are the original cuts of each episode as aired on NBC in the '80s, and they contain footage which (unless you have the Columbia House tapes) hasn't been seen since, due to syndication and commercial edits.

One other thing I must add here is that ALL of the episodes from Knight Rider's first season are included. My biggest disappointment with the Columbia House release of the show is that they remastered only a handful of episodes from the series' four-year run. This set contains the entire first season of the show in its entirety, presumably with the complete seasons two, three and four to follow.

The extras are great, too. There are interviews with David Hasselhoff, Glen Larson and even Stu Phillips (who, together with Glen, composed the infamous Knight Rider theme). Speaking of the theme, there's even an entire extra devoted to how the theme music was created, which was awesome for someone who loves the KR soundtrack (like I do). My only complaint was that Don Peake, the talented man who used Stu and Glen's theme to score probably 85% of the show's episodes, was never mentioned.

The bonus fourth disc includes some more nice interviews, some nifty blueprints of KITT's dash, scans of set designs, and even the entire Knight Rider 2000 movie that aired on NBC in 1991! Additionally, "Knight of the Phoenix," the show's pilot episode, has a commentary track available, featuring the voices of Glen Larson and David Hasselhoff. (David's really hamming it up.)

This is the DVD boxed set that any Knight Rider aficionado absolutely must own. The producers of this set are to be congratulated for putting together a real quality product. Now I'm waiting for the next three seasons to arrive on DVD too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic viewing!!, 7 Mar 2006
Having grown up watching Knight Rider on TV it's been fantastic to see the show finally begin to be released on DVD. This DVD of season 1 has higher quality visuals and sound than other DVD's of Knight Rider i have seen. It's great to be able to re-live all of the action and magic that this series brought to me as a child, and it's great to see that it's aged well.

All 21 episodes are in chronological order on 8 DVD's (although the Pilot episode is on disc 7 for some reason) and also includes the more recent made-for-tv movie - Knight Rider 2000. Other bonus features include photo stills, a behind the scenes featurette, info on how the Knight Rider theme was composed, a display of KITT's dash explaining what all the functions do and the humourous audio commentary over the Pilot episode from David Hasselhoff and Glen Larson which gives you a lot of interesting info you may not have noticed/known.

The only slight downside to this set is the lack of the cut scene's that are usually before each of the episodes, but since all that footage is in each episode anyway you're not really losing anything.

Definitely a must if you're a Knight Rider fan, and Amazon's price on this set is far far lower than anywhere else i have seen it, so go buy it right now!! I will definitely be buying the rest of the seasons when they are released!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Long Knight, 29 Nov 2005
By P. Foxton - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This DVD box set is quite well put together featuring all episodes from the first season, including (get this!) the pilot and the movie, Knight Rider 2000! The pilot is included on one of the later discs and not at the beginning. I didn't notice this, so went out and bought that cheap release which has the pilot and a couple of episodes on! doh! However, I did notice that this box set had better sound and visuals that that other version, so I think they've attempted a 'digital remaster'.
There's good selection of special features over the 8 discs including a bit about the music and a bit about the stunts, but they are all 5 minute featurettes so don't expect any great documentaries. The episodes are in chronological order (which is why I got confused re: the pilot) and there is also a directors commentary with David Hasselhoff and creator Glen A Larson, which is quite humourous. David seems totally mental while Glen takes the mickey out of everything Hasselhoff says! There's also a special feature where there is a nice graphic of KITTs dashboard and you can move around it using your DVD controller. Then you select a bit of the dash that interests you and it tells you what the buttons do - eg: you can see what button turbo boost is and what it's capabilities are.
All in all a great DVD box set with a decent amount of special features, though some of them could have been longer. You'll love it if you are a fan of Knightrider and the episodes are still great (if a little dated in some respects) and it's really fun to watch. Recommended.
