4.0 out of 5 stars Apocalypse Now, 24 Oct 2004
By Ben Saunders (Oxford) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Action/horror films and rock/metal music. An ideal match it seems, and RE2 shows no sign of breaking with tradition...

A veritable clutch of big names are roped in. The new stuff from Slipknot and Cradle Of Filth is much better than before. Rammstein's last single's included (though the album's out now) and both 36 CF and KSE put in impressive showings.

The few bands I hadn't really heard of didn't let things down much. They were average, but no worse. The one thing I did think wouldn't work was Massive Attack, but following a Rob Zombie remix it fits in surprisingly well, and doesn't jar at all.

I'm never too convinced about soundtracks without the visual element, but I think this one stands on its own feet better than most. Shame I heard the film wasn't too good...

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark n Moody, 17 Oct 2004
This album eschews the regular soundtrack lark of cobbling together a bunch of ill-fitting tracks that bear little or no resemblance to the atmosphere of the film itself. After listening to the soundtrack and then seeing the film, you realise how they complement each other VERY nicely.

This collection of songs not only maintain an eerie, dark feeling throughout but also give yuo a great snapshot of what's going on in today's heavy music world, at the same time. No mean feat! From the opening volley of Killswitch Engage (with YET another emotive yet crushing song) and ever-rising Utah crew, The Used, all the way through to the more chilled out offerings from Massive Attack and the wonderful Cure, the quality doesn't wilt. If forced to pick out a highlight (which is like someone asking you to pick a star player in the Real Madrid team), I'd plump for the haunting effort from 36 Crazyfists, 'Bloodowork'. Heavy yet somber and affecting, this sums up the album as whole.

More than worthwhile, you'll be listening to this waiting for the DVD of the film to be released to complete your set. Much like the previous Resident Evil soundtrack released a few years ago, this is another atmospheric triumph for those involved. Great stuff!
