4.0 out of 5 stars The music is sublime, but it,s not the best representation., 11 Nov 2005

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
There are so many compilations from the Italian maestro available that a great deal of homework is required before you make a purchase. All I can say is if you are looking for a comprehensive overview of Morricones career or a definitive best of there are superior versions around than this one.
For a start it neglects to include the truly majestic full suite from “Once Upon a Time in the West”, one of the most glorious pieces of music ever recorded .That’s an oversight of a criminal nature. And the excerpts that are on here are different to the original recordings from the soundtrack, recorded in a lower key for some reason. Still there’s much of the material you would expect from any credible Morricone compilation though. The stuff from the spaghetti westerns which will still after all these years get you squinting as if looking into some blazing sandblasted landscape and saying “Hey blondie” in a ridiculous cod Mexican accent. Well that’s what I do. The wonderful music from “The Mission” is well represented but only one track from the “Once Upon A Time in America” soundtrack the swoon worthy “Deborah’s Theme” is a bit stingy. “Cinema Paradiso” is as sublime as ever and the more contemporary stuff is well covered, some would say to a deleterious degree. The standout here of the more modern music both in terms of quality and artistically is his theme for “The Thing” which even embraces electronics and is suitably portentous and eerie. One surprise is the inclusion of “Chi Mai” which I thought was from a TV series but was used in a film I’ve never heard of called “Le Professional”.
My advice for what it’s worth is to buy the separate soundtracks for “The Mission”, “Once Upon A Time In America” and “Once Upon A Time In The West” (Incidentally this film contains the greatest juxtaposition of film and music in cinema history when Franks mob emerge from the undergrowth after gunning down the unfortunate Mcbain family and the music soars in time to their cool deliberate steps and their swaying wind cheaters ……utterly magnificent). Then buy the most comprehensive compilation you can find. This is a fairly good representation and being Morricone the music is mostly sublime but it’s by no means the best out there.
