People more frozen over than the Polar caps have been known to melt upon hearing the luscious voice of A Girl Called Eddy. 'The Long Goodbye' was the second single taken from her debut (eponymously-titled) album released in 2004. It is one of the more upbeat tracks of an album brimful of sad, soothing torch songs. In spite of the more buoyant tempo, however, the lyrics still manage to exude pain - this time the pain of breaking up with somebody, irrespective of how nonchalantly it might be played out. Separating the record collection is occasion for a bitter dig: "Take your records, leave me mine / You're the one who said we lived it all on borrowed time". Once again Moran demonstrates her way with words and rhymes: "You stormed my winter palace / You rid my heart of every bit of malice, baby".

The single is fleshed out with a new track of hers called 'Under the Warm Sun' as well as a live recording of the soulful 'Heartache' for Dave Lee Travis's BBC show. The opening bars of the new song are strangely reminiscent of the Beach Boys - perhaps not quite so strangely given the diversity of her musical upbringing (her father played trumpet; her mother religiously played Tommy Dorsey and Frank Sinatra records and her elder brother fed her the music of The Beatles and The Monkees) and her apparent interest in 1960s music. In this song, the light and airy melody is matched by laid-back lyrics and the acceptance of past pain: 'I've been so tired of being so cold / Just wanted that sunny place to grow old.../ And life is sweeter than I ever thought it could be / If you'd have told me I never would have believed'.

Her live recording of 'Heartache', stripped of the exquisite orchestration and production to be heard on the album version, makes the song all the more naked and visceral. 'Once there was spring inside his eyes,' she sings with sadness and langour, 'Now there's only autumn winds / And sad grey skies'.
