Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Fried's eponymous debut is a rare gem of an album. Combining truly emotive songwriting with achingly evocative vocals, Friedis one of the most accomplished mixes of soul/funk and R&B in years. The result of a five year search by former Fine Young Cannibals songwriter David Steele to find the perfect singer, Fried combines Steele's undeniable talents with that of 23-year old New Orleans gospel singer Jonte Short.

Evoking both the maverick vocal gymnastic of Macy Gray and smouldering old-soul charm of Fontella Bass and Aretha Franklin, Short's honeyed vocals reflect pain, frustration and joy with remarkable ease. Opening track and first single "If You Get Out Of Jail" swings with a deep bass hook, while strings, slide guitar and a rap by RZA pepper proceedings, but its Short crying out for her denied loving that gets the spine a tingling. With Steele having resisted Macy Gray's attempts to acquire "Whatever I Choose" it's somewhat ironic that Short's vocals echo her so strongly on the track. But it's the singer's remarkably nimble shifts in mood and range from the carefree summery lilt of "Sugar Water Days" to Beth Gibbon's forlorn contemplation "Stranger In This Land, that makes otherwise good songs great. --Christopher Barrett

Album Description

Fried consist of former Fine Young Cannibals songwriter David Steele (the crazy-legged guitarist) and the outstandingly gifted 23-year old New Orleans vocalist Jonte Short, whose voice has been compared to Lauryn Hill and Macy Gray. The eponymous debut album of this beauty-and-experience duo, includes the storming single "Whatever I Choose I Lose".

5.0 out of 5 stars Class Act!, 30 Aug 2004
By Michael Mouse (Leeds, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
First I'll start with my only criticism... the name. Fried. What??? Fried???

Okay - I won't dwell on that. And yes - it's my only criticism.

This album blew me away. It's like an album from decades ago that's just been found and released - I mean that in a good way - when Soul HAD soul. To think it was written in this decade, by a member of FYC and the singer is only 23 astonishes me.

At first listen, I can only describe it as a more soulful, less pop, less polished Morcheeba (all compliments). The scratchy production and instrumentation are perfect for this kind of album - too much polish sterilizes soul. This is real. This is Soul!

Jonte's voice is wonderful. Ignore any comparisons - her voice is distinctive and worthy of it's own label. Singing in church has obviously honed her sound, and gives her voice and delivery a rich experienced tone.

I can't find a bad track here, and I've tried purely to give a balanced review. Highlights of the album for me are 'Love Is A Stranger' (a simple slow track which really shows off Jonte's vocals), 'You're With The Wrong One' (great bass and raw sounding vocals).

Certainly the best soul album I've heard in many many years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poppy Soul Power, baby!, 19 Nov 2004
I totally agree with Michael from Leeds' review, but don't let the Morcheeba comparisons put you off!
I simply cannot get this CD out of my discman and have played it on repeat for weeks! My Dad got me into this after he heard the "When You Get Out of Jail" track, and I must admit, it didn't grab me straight away. However, the album is laden with poppy soulful classics and is definitely a "grower". It's basically the pet project of the Fine Young Cannibals guitarist, David Steele (as mentioned in all the Amazon reviews) where he produced the music using guitars, samples and hip hop drum beats, and what you get is a modern hip-hop twist on Motown soul. And it really works.
The production is absolutely perfect - slight scratching sounds in the mix only add to the classic soul/vinyl feel! And it showcases the fantastic vocals of Jonte Short, which are the icing on the cake here. Apparently Steele was looking for a sassy soulful Aretha Franklin wannabe to do the vocals, and he hunted high and low in the UK and the States. The effort was worth it - he's unearthed a real talent in this lady. Plenty of gospel-honed oomph, great control and breathing and she puts a whole lot of emotion in the lyrics.
Standout tunes for me are "Whatever I Choose I Lose" (the 2nd single, a Motown-y sighing lament/shrug of the shoulders about being unlucky in love, sung over a looped guitar riff, and with a great beat) and "Sugar Water Days" (a barnstorming perky pop tune reminiscing about childhood with ace multi-tracked harmonies).
This is quite simply one of the best pop albums of the past 10 years and comes highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fried....surprisingly good, 14 Sep 2004
By A Customer
I first saw the review for this album on Amazon, having never really heard of the group before. The review looked so positive that I thought it was worth buying the album(I don't normally do this).

From the first play the whole album had me hooked, the main thing that jumped out at me was the stunning voice of Jonte Short. Her sound is very much from the motown era but the production of each song gives it a very funky edge.

As you go through the album you do get to see the variation in Jonte Short's voice, especially Things Change(a funky/retro sound), Aint You The One(a more gentler sounding soul) and Friends In Lo Places(a strong vocal performance with a slight hip hop feel).

After listening to the cd once I was really surprised how good it was, it's definately the type of CD you can have in the background while your mates are around. I can't really fault any of the tracks as each one is pretty strong in it's own right.

Take a chance and buy this cd cos you definately wont regret it if your into your funk/rnb, it hasn't left my cd player since I put it in!
