Having listened to another of Harrison Birtwhistle's inpenetrable scores on the radio this morning I found this impulse buy was the very thing to make me smile. It's attractive and easy to listen to. Just the sort of thing to make the elitest sneer!

My favourite piece was the U.F.O. music. Try to imagine Messian writing a score for a 'Star Wars' movie! OK, it's not exactly life afirming the way Beethoven is but it will make you realsie that some contemporary composers want to make their music paletable and not just write for two people and a dog.

The versatile Marin Alsop conducts a responsive Colorado Symphony Orchestra with Evelyn Glennie the stunning soloist.

I've had this disk sitting on my shelves for a couple of years after picking it up as part of a three for the price of two offer on Naxos somewhere. I may have played it once at the time but clearly I was not paying attention. A few days ago I caught Evelyn Glennie's film, Touch the Sound, on TV and I was reminded just how good she is and that I really ought to have some of her stuff. It then occurred to me that I had this Naxos disk on which she featured. This time I was paying attention and I've been playing the thing to death ever since. Daugherty is indeed a fine composer, his music swaggers without ever becoming tasteless, and its inventive enough to be fresh but without being in any way difficult. By the way don't be put off by the bizarre titles, though they may seem flippant the music is not. The UFO composition is the one written for Glennie and she is given full opportunity to display her awesome powers. She is streets ahead of anyone else who bangs things for musical purposes, in any genre. Anyway. Enough said. Think I'll just pop off and play it one more time before bed.
