Its so strange this band has recieved such little credit. Formed in Nebraska, three guys made their debut "Echelons" (1987), indebted to British bands such as Joy Division and (early)The Cure, but original enough to be the forefathers of dreampop. The overall tone of the album is quite gloomy, perhaps not so much musically but lyrically, with jeffery runnings singing melancholy above washed out guitar and a driving drumbeat that don't appear to (want to) stop. Echelons has keyboards added in the mix (unlike its even better follow-up "December") and gives it a ethereal feel. There's not a weak track on here, but "echelons", "Autocrat", and "Get on with it" stand out, (two of which can be found on youtube somewhere). Amazing debut. Just listen to it (and "December").
