Product Description

Manufacturer's Description
With a cool white body, the MPIO HD200 is set to be the top style choice for music lovers and digital audio fans alike. Coming with a generous 5GB hard drive, that's 25% more than one of its 'mini' competitors which equates to around an extra 16 hours of tracks, the MPIO HD200 can supply you with almost 80 hours of music and with in-built SRS Wow sound and 5 band equalizer, it certainly sounds the part.

They Can't Beat This:
With many other mid-capacity MP3 players coming soon, the MPIO HD200 pips most to the post by supporting MP3, WMA, ASF and OGG file formats. With the integrated FM stereo, fast USB2.0 downloading and up to a whopping 16 hours of battery life (up to 8 hours more than its 'mini' competitor), the HD200's entertainment is almost endless.

The extra large screen has 6 lines and an icon driven, easy to use main menu system. Navigation is performed by a scroll wheel on the right hand side and a handy back button. The volume controls are on the top of the player and handling the device is a dream. If you would rather keep the HD200 in your pocket out of site, there is an optional stick remote (shown in picture opposite), giving you track navigation and volume control. In addition to its fantastic music handling, the delivery is more than perfect with the supplied headphones.

And there's more:
The HD200 also features a Mic for voice recording and a line input for direct MP3 encoding, making it versatile enough to handle any music collection. The USB connection and line input are hidden and protected from dust and dirt on the bottom of the HD200, where you will also find the power input for attaching the AC charger.

Summary:
If you are looking for a more flexible and clearly better featured offering than the HD200's 'mini' competitor, then the HD200 is the obvious choice. Why be stuck with getting music from one or two download sites, when the HD200 has compatibility with the widely available OD2 download services (Wanadoo, Tiscali, Virgin, MyCokeMusic, HMV, etc) and Napster, just load the files in to Windows Media Player and transfer them to the HD200, the HD200 is likely to appeal to a wider range of consumers.

Add to the MP3, OGG Vorbis and WMA function, direct encoding, FM radio, USB Mass Storage and voice recorder then you have a player that covers everything. With the longer battery life of up to 16 hours and WMA file compression virtually doubling the drive capacity (WMA files can be compressed to half the size of MP3 files), the HD200 offers longer listening time to more tunes.

    5.0 out of 5 stars WMA, MP3 - HD200 is the one for me..., 9 Dec 2004
I was almost set on getting another white or multicoloured (smaller) player before I stumbled across the HD200, but I am glad I did a little bit more searching.

I had planned on transferring all my files from my PC to the other brand of 'white' player until someone mentioned to me that it wouldn't playback WMA files, too which I said what's a WMA file?

Now if like me you happily use Windows Media Player to encode your CD's happy in the thought that you are getting MP3 files, then think again. In fact you get WMA files which are claimed to be Microsoft's equivalent to MP3's, I didn't know there was a difference I have to say!

Anyway fortunately someone did mention this and also said that the other 'white and multicoloured' players would not play the files. On checking I found this to be true. Also on further digging I found that if I did decide to download 'legal' tracks in the future my choice of where to buy from was going to be severely limited by this.

So with this new information I looked for players that would play both MP3 and WMA files and found a number of products, but the HD200 stood out.

Now with 5GB of storage that's 25% more than the leading equivalent and I also get an easy unit to copy my tracks onto rather than using another piece of software.

There is also a utility program that will scan the player and break all the files into Genre, Album, Artist etc, to help in the searching for my music. Although I have to admit I like to use the Directory option as this is how I see my files on my PC.

On top of the better storage the HD also has a radio, voice recorder and direct encoding although I am still a little green behind the ears on how I would use that when I have a PC and a CD Drive. I don't have any what 'old people' call vinyl so I guess it's not something I need to worry about too much.

One thing that is noticeable though is that I am only achieving around 10 hours worth of playback, but I don't suppose I am working under the claimed lab test requirements that a lot of these manufacturers work under.

Ah well must go my little friend is serenading me again...Hope this helps!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Sound And Features, 30 Dec 2004
    By A Customer
I think the last review was a bit harsh. The sound quality is excellent and far better than the iPod. There are a whole number of different sound settings to play with, like WOW and 'SRS' setting (sound retrieval system) which brings an immediacy in sound. Also there's TruBass. The guy who wrote the previous review said you should get new headphones which is totally wrong because there designed to capture these various settings, I recommend he invest in some cotton buds to clear his ears out.

Also you get extra features like a voice recorder and an excellent radio which has a visual picture display of the frequency.

People who are used to a see saw type navigation won't have a problem with using this. When you put the latest firmware upgrades on it works like a treat.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not an iPod killer, 5 Nov 2004
    By A Customer
Well, it's small, white and lightweight; but no iPod. The main problem is the clunky interface, with a jog lever that just feels loose. I've also found it can lock up when disconnecting from USB (even when properly stopped). The reset button just reboots it though - so this isn't a problem.
Having said that, the sound quality is pretty good - though you'll need to dump the (white) earplugs and get something more comfortable (or is it just my ears?). Equaliser has loads of settings and FM radio is OK (you have to upgrade the firmware from the supplied CD to activate it), but is prone to losing signal while moving around ('phones lead is the aerial).
MPIO manual and user guide (on CD) is in dodgy Korean English and in fact the player was set up in Korean until I found out how to change it by trial and error.
Slightly more worrying was that the mains interface plug (that goes into your 13amp socket) was improperly assembled, with a screw only half inserted!

So... 4 stars for value, but only 2.5 for build/ergonomics
