4.0 out of 5 stars The Lovers, 28 Oct 2004
By scott (Manchester,England) - See all my reviews
Being a fan of the excellent and hugely influential Manchester band the Inspiral Carpets, I have to admit I was a bit sceptical about buying an album by Tom Hingleys current band the Lovers, I suppose I was scared of being let down. However, this was not the case and I liked the album instantly.

The guitar solo on 'The third cumming' has a touch of John Squire to it; maybe it is their homage to the roses 'second coming album and Mr Hingley sounds strangely like Iggy Pop on 'Temperamental Jimmy', which is not a bad thing at all

Last track 'the perfect body' is an emotional, piano driven tune, that fits tom's powerful vocals perfectly, and it's extremely refreshing for an album to actually finish with a stand out track, saving the best until last.

The influence of various English punk bands like The Stranglers, The Jam and The Fall is apparent throughout this album, which is hardly surprising given the fact that two members of the Lovers are major figures in the history of the Fall.

Ladies and gentleman, I must stress that 'Abba are the enemy' is a fine album, delivering a good mix of balls out punk with a pop sensibility.

5.0 out of 5 stars ABBA are the Enemy indeed.., 25 Oct 2004
Tom Hingley and the Lovers album is pure Class, Full of Modern References and astute views of todays music scene which Tom is Never shy to express! Tom (ex-Inspirals Frontman for those less in the know) With Steve and Paul Hanley from The Fall Along with Keyboard maestro Kelly Wood Have put together this 12 track beauty which includes the CD-Rom Video for Online Pharmacy..a Track which expresses the Feeling many of us get when receive those unsolicited "get your viagra here" and "discount drugs straight from somewhere dodgy" spam e-mails. Other Tracks deal with Artificially created pop-sensations (Boyband), Courtney Love (Hole) Getting On (I Feel Old) And tell me who else could bring off a track called "Tattyfalarious" Which you can still sing along with :o) I have had the Good Fortune to see them live and believe you me, It's well worth it..BUY IT NOW!
