This is only the second recording ever made of this collective composition, a collaboration between 7 different composers, headed by Schoenberg & Stravinsky. The first recording (1945) was reissued 4 years ago, and has already been deleted, so this modern version is welcome. Much of the score was lost, and 3 movements have been reconstructed for this new version.

As with so many ventures of this sort, the results are a little uneven, with Schoenberg's very modern Prelude sitting uncomfortably alongside the more traditional movements. Indeed, some sections are very film-score-like in manner, but none the worse for that.

The orchestra & choir were recorded in Berlin in 2000, and the narration, by 5 experienced American actors, was added three years later (nice to hear Barbara Feldon, Agent 99 in Mel Brooks' spoof 'Get Smart' in more serious vein!). Gerard Schwarz holds the whole piece together very well, though even he can't disguise the anti-climactic nature of Stravinsky's Babel which ends the work. A digital version of Schoenberg's Prelude justifies the price in itself.

Altogether, highly recommended, and thanks are due to the Milken Archive for underwriting this excellent project.
