5.0 out of 5 stars Never been bettered, 21 Dec 2004
By David Slater (Nottingham UK) - See all my reviews

I bought this out of curiosity having heard how good the old Living Stereo recordings were. They were recorded with just 2 or 3 omnidirectional mikes, straight with no mixing or tweaking.
Well its all true. 1955 recording and transferred direct to SACD from the original master tape. The sound quality & stereo image is breathtaking.
Seems recording has only gone downhill from then. Could it have been the all valve recording process?

5.0 out of 5 stars scepticism turned to belief, 31 Jul 2006
By Mr. Dc Fowler "fowlerd17" (Portsmouth UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was a tad sceptical with the fulsome praise this recording and other releases of Living Stereo recordings had receieved. I needed a replacement for the Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta, a recording of which I had owned years ago, from Deutsch Gramaphon (and very good). Let's face it these Living Stereo recordings were made at the beginning of the hifi era so we must have learned a lot since then? Modern recording must be better? Of course. Well, I'm glad I was so wrong. I put this in the car stereo on a long journey and played it twice all the way through. The warmth and clarity of the sound is truly breathtaking and the finale section of the Concerto for Orchestra on this record should be made illegal to play when driving. I guess it must be not only the recording engineer's ability but the use of valve-powered equipment.
The 'space' in which the recording has been made seems to me very different from that used in modern recordings. There is a ton of ambience which suggests (I may be wrong) that this was recorded in a proper concert hall, not a damped-to-death studio.
This is the only (the only) recording of anything that enabled me to think for a moment that there was an orchestra along with me in the car. I can't wait to play it on my system at home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Vivid Performances!, 22 Nov 2008
By Scriabinmahler (Cambridge UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Reiner's classic account of Bartok's two major works still sounds incredibly vivid and incandescent. This recording is a living document of how gloriously alive music making was at the time and how dull and dead we've all become nowadays in contrast.

50s' stereo sound has amazing presence and reality of each instrument, occasionally tutti sections cause breaking noise and distortion though. But who cares, if the music is played with such vitality! Check also Reiner's unbelievably eloquent Pathetique Symphony and R.Strauss Symphonic Poems;

Reiner conducts Tchaikovsky
Strauss: Tod und Verklärung; Sinfonia Domestica
Strauss:Also Sprach Zarathustra
Brahms/Dvorak/R Strauss: Orchestral Works
