5.0 out of 5 stars Quartets to Follow the Classics, 9 May 2007
By N. E. M. Goulder (Saffron Walden, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is an intriguing disc which I have lived with for more than two years now. The last composer to sit down and write six string quartets for a single commission was Beethoven with his Opus 18 set. Close on two hundred years later, this antique concept is revived for "Mad Max" Maxwell Davies. Naxos have been bold and commissioned ten quartets - hats off to them for their courage, and it's great to report that there's some very interesting music that is flowing from their initiative.
Max has enjoyed a remarkably varied career as a composer, with some disorienting staged and semi-staged pieces early on, some profound and intense smaller scale music (e.g. the wonderful Ave Maris Stella) in the 1970's and 1980's, a big foray into writing 8 symphonies and a dozen concerti, and recently at 67 we get the first two quartets in 2002 (as of date of writing, Max is 72 and we are nine quartets into the Naxos ten).
The quartets here draw heavily on Berg and a little on Bartok. Max himself credits Haydn and Beethoven, with a nod to Chopin as regards the skimmed "finale" of the first quartet (I ignore, as Naxos seem minded to, Max's 1961 string quartet) - I think this is fair as regards the structural and emotional roots of the music but serious echoes of Berg appear, most obviously in the first quartet where the Lyric Suite is almost quoted verbatim in a figure of importance.
The Maggini drive into this music with terrific grit. They obviously get a lot from it and I have to say that Max makes a strong case for there being genuine unexplored territory here - there are elements of tonality here and there (many listeners may find this an eye-brow-raising comment) but substantially you have fair transparency of structure and a language which is both lucid and distinctive if you give it the time to settle in your mind. One is tempted to lampoon Max for his "Sudoku-Dodecaphony" - he cheerfully admits to running his numbers through "pandiagonal magic squares". I suspect history will lose little time in joining those currently of the view that this concept is total tosh. Yet the music is undeniably vibrant. I don't think it matters a jot where Max takes his notes from - he's a true composer, and while much of his symphonic and concertante music has rightly been criticised for lack of linguistic development, here you have a very fine pair of quartets with some deeply atmospheric writing.
The recording is as effective as the Maggini's peformances. Warmly recommended.
