This stunning double album includes all the music the prolific Bennett has written for solo piano. Future releases planned are for a recording that covers all the works for piano duo and duet and a further CD to include the piano concerto.
The first CD in this present recording surveys the music written in Bennett's later, more tonal, style between 1981-2000. It opens with his most substantial piece, at 24 minutes, for piano solo, 'Noctuary', variations on three themes of Scott Joplin. The other major compositions are the 'Three Romantic Pieces' and 'Excursions'. Rather oddly, the liner notes describe this latter work as 'three unrelated pieces' when, in fact, it seems(to me, at least)to be a sonata in all but name. The first movement (Vivo) is a fully-developed sonata allegro with a 'first subject' of great motivic concentration and a beautiful, singing second theme. The 'slow movement' is, in effect, a 12-bar blues. The finale, returning to the work's main tonal centre of C (but this time in the minor key) is a jazz-influenced rondo in ABCBA form.
The shorter pieces are all absolute gems and the disc ends with the rather lovely theme from Bennett's music for the film 'Eustace and Hilda'.
The second CD includes earlier works,from the student-period Sonata of 1954, through the semi-serialist 'Fantasy' to the dramatic and powerful 'Scena I' written for the BBC Piano Competition in 1974. The Sonata begins with a somewhat Bartokian allegro but the emotional centre of gravity of the piece is an intense and majestic slow movement. The 'Five Studies', like the 'Scena' display Bennett's gift for writing music of persuasive emotional directness, even when his style was more overtly modernist.
The remainder of the disc includes all Bennett's teaching pieces, lovingly and exquisitely played by Martin Jones.
The playing is virtuosic (when it needs to be), warm, passionate and deeply felt. I would recommend this album very strongly to anyone interested in contemporary, yet accessible, piano music. And maybe to some who feel they aren't - you may be happily surprised!
