5.0 out of 5 stars a diamond in the rough!, 4 Nov 2004

Working with digital camera's every day I have a decent knowledge of most camera's available on the high street at the minute and I can honestly say that this is possibly the best. I personally own the A70 which I now couldnt live without. If you're buying your first digital camera I would highly reccommend this one. It's quick and easy to use and the results are splendid. A good all round camera that delivers a professional photograph.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent camera, great value and easy to use, 20 Sep 2004

This is a delightful little camera. I am so pleased with mine, and have taken thousands of photos in the month or so I have had it. It is packed with features, is reliable and has good build quality. It fits comfortably in my hand, and I think it looks great. It uses Compact Flash memory cards with are easy to use, and dirt cheap.

I would heartily recommend it to any one, especially at Amazons current price!

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality and value, 25 Jan 2005
By Graham Phillips (Cambridge, UK) - See all my reviews

In giving this camera five stars, I am not saying it is the best camera available, only that it is as good as you could expect at this sort of price. It handles pretty well: chunky enough to hold on a cold day; reasonably fast focusing and shutter release (could be better), and the buttons and menus are easy enough to understand . A decent set of batteries will last for ages.

Picture quality is fine: you can get pin sharp 8 inch by 6 inch prints, and pretty good looking prints up to A4 size or even more. At the default settings the camera has a slight tendency to over-sharpen the image and over-saturate the colours. For most people most of the time these effects will result in good strong punchy prints. If you want to do your own post-processing in Photoshop then you can switch off the in-camera sharpening and opt for more subdued colours.

Kudos to Canon for providing a well-written printed manual rather than the disc-only PDFs that some other companies are getting away with these days. The manual is worth dipping into from time to time: there's a lot more to this camera than just point-and-shoot. You can start off with the fully automatic settings and gradually learn how to get more control.

You will need to get a bigger CF card. (I don't think that you will see any significant benefit in the more expensive high-speed cards, so go for size rather than speed). You will also need a set of good NiMH batteries (at least 2000 mAh) and charger, and possibly a case as well, so your total outlay will be more than the price shown. It's still good value, though, and I don't believe the A95 is worth the extra.
