Amazon.co.uk Review
Normally, an artist such as Bjork with a mass audience across the globe steadily eases off as the back-catalogue starts to grow. However, Medulla, the fifth proper studio album from Bjork is without a doubt the most challenging collection of music she has ever released.

For the most part, the album is made up of layers uponlayers of processed vocal parts arranged in either harmony or dissonance such as "Vokuro" and "Oll Birtan", respectively. Some, such as "Show Me Forgiveness" are simple acapella, the aforementioned sounding like a vocal cut from Debut minus the music. Another echo of Bjork days gone by is "Desired Constellation", a slow trancy pulse underpinning her distinct vocals. "Where is the Line", "Who Is It" and "Triumph of a Heart" are a bit grimier with a semi-urban twist, the latter a fantastically funky beatbox number with an outstanding introduction, the closest moment to a pop song appearing on Medulla.

Although traditional instruments and breaks have been removed from this album, Medulla is no great departure for Bjork but in a sense it is radically different from any of her previous work. Some will love it, some hate it, and some just wont be sure what to think. --David Trueman

Album Description
Recorded in 18 different locations including New York, Iceland, Venice and The Canary Islands, Medúlla sees Björk collaborating with another crack-team of alchemists and fellow mavericks. Some of them – programmer Mark Bell; mixer Mark 'Spike' Stent; Valgeir Sigurdsson--were already time-served Björkians. Others – Inuit throat-singer Tanya Tagaq Gillis; Japanese a cappella ace Dokaka; the esteemed Robert Wyatt--were not. Erstwhile Faith No More singer Mike Patton and Rahzel, his buddy from The Roots, are on the album, too. The former came on-board after Björk, adrenalised post-gig, took him to one side to rave about the project.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's different, but give it time, 24 Aug 2004
By P Jackson (Crewe, Cheshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
OK, I listened to it once, and seriously thought I'd wasted my money. But my advice on this album would be to play it again and again, and after a few spins, it becomes hypnotically beautiful. It certainly isn't commercial, but if Bjork sold herself to the masses, she'd lose at least this one fan. You really do have to try with a lot of this music, and I don't profess for one moment to understand one half of what Bjork is trying to communicate here (but then I only got the album a few days ago). I've listened to it regularly and have to say this could rank as the best contribution she's yet made to the music industry. It's different, some people sure are gonna loathe it, but I say bravo for doing something so personal and original. Some of it sounds more classical than popular to my ears (possibly due to her recent collaboration with John Tavener) - track 4 is an example. I didn't think Bjork still had it in her to surprise me, but hey, she's done it again!

3.0 out of 5 stars Artistic indulgence or artistic genius?, 20 Aug 2004

Where to begin???

I had wondered where Bjork's music could go after the fantastic Vespertine. When I heard this would be a completely vocal affair I was apprehensive - which I guess even after listening to the album I still haven't shaken off.

I have absolutely no doubt in Bjork's talents, and I'm sure some fans will adore this album and some won't, but most will join me somewhere in the middle. I admire artists who can take risks - and this is one big risk - personally, I miss the lush arrangements which I think complement Bjork's vocals (choirs are used instead here - with mixed results).

Vocal harmonies are fine - yet there are times in this record I just couldn't help thinking of The Flying Pickets. Maybe they didn't get as far as Iceland, and who knows, if they had, Bjork may have reconsidered this album.

While the beatboxing is at times exhilarating and technically brilliant ('Where Is The Line' and 'Triumph Of The Heart'), it does tend to detract from the proceedings. It's so clinical it detracts from the artform it is supposed to show off - using a drum machine would have had the same effect. The choirs are at times too shrill and overbearing that for once, Bjork takes a back seat.

At times some of the songs ('Ancestors' for example) sound like speech therapy classes (I'm not kidding!). It's so bizarre it's almost funny (and not what Bjork would have intended).

So - another review down and I don't feel I've been able to be constructive about this album - but I'm sure when you hear it you'll feel exactly the same. This is as original an album as you could get ,and so uncommercial it makes Radiohead's Kid A sound like the Backstreet Boys - and you'd expect nothing less from Bjork.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius., 27 Dec 2004
Easily the most boundary pushing effort in music at the moment, Medulla is everything you don't expect from Bjork, mixed with her inimitable grasp on the artistic aspects of music. Its been described as her 'Kid A', which I would absolutely agree with, challenging to her fans and non-fans alike. As Kid A was repugnant to the wrist-slitting indie guitar-worshipping types, many will balk at the idea of beatboxing on a Bjork album. Divisive, yes. Bonkers, possibly. Genius, undeniably.
