Album Description
The exceptionally gifted German pianist Alexander Lonquich's first solo recital disc for ECM is devoted to French piano music of the late 19th and early 20th century.
'Plainte Calme' is a beautiful, thoughtfully played selection that shows different aspects of the development of modern composition in France. Lonquich's insight is unusual in a pianist so closely identified with the German tradition.
The lyricism of Fauré, one of the most enduring of French composers, is revealed in his Five Impromptus (1882-1909), which Lonquich scatters like jewels through his album. Ravel's popular "Gaspard de la nuit" (1908) is intensely romantic and a virtuosic tour-de-force. The Eight Preludes (1929) were Olivier Messiaen's first published work - inspired by the atmospheres of Debussy, but already full of the transcendent sensitivity to sound-colour that was to make Messiaen the most outstanding composer of his generation.

About the Artist
Alexander Lonquich, born in Trier in 1976, has worked closely with Claudio Abbado, Kurt Sanderling, Ton Koopman, and especially with Sandor Vegh. He plays chamber music with Heinz Holliger, Joshua Bell, Tabea Zimmermann, Thomas Demenga, Shlomo Mintz, Steven Isserlis, and Miklós Perényi, and his solo discs, for EMI, of Mozart, Schubert, and Schumann, have received much critical acclaim and prizes ranging from the Edison Award to the Diapason d'Or.
Plainte calme is the second ECM recording to feature Lonquich. He previously contributed to Israeli composer Gideon Lewensohn's prize-winning album 'Odradek' in 2001.
