Product Description

Album Description

Living legends and elder statesmen of the most extreme music on earth, Megadeth return with their first album in over three years. The System Has Failed is a return to the form that produced the genre classic Rust in Peace and may well be classed as their most accomplished album so far. This is heavy metal in the purest sense. Megadeth are back and there are still none heavier.

5.0 out of 5 stars An album we never thought we'd see, 10 Aug 2004
By D. Griffiths (Wales) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
After Dave Mustaine effectively ended Megadeth with his injured arm a couple of years back, the prospect of any new Megadeth album, yet alone such a good one, seemed bleak. After getting an advance copy I can confidently say fans won't be disappointed. Original lead guitarist Chris Poland returns to provide his blinding and instantly familiar style, but aside from that no other old members play here with bassist Jimmie Sloas and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta providing the tigtht rhythm section (though I hear Nick Menza is returning as Megadeth's live drummer).

The style of 'The System has Failed' is Classic Megadeth, there is a marked return to the thrash style of old on many tracks. 'Kick the Chair' for instance could be straight off 'Rust in Peace', and 'Shadow of Deth' sports one of the heaviest riffs they have ever done. This is more than just a Rust in Peace clone however, its a very strong and unique album in its own right, and there are also a few touches of 'Countdown to Extinction' to be heard here also.

If you believed Megadeth were in decline after 'Countdown', and 'Youthansia' then this new offering may restore your faith in Dave Mustaine as a talented musician and songwriter. This is an essential purchase for all Megadeth fans of old, but also has enough strong material to attract new listeners.

5.0 out of 5 stars You have to buy this album!, 13 Aug 2004
10 times better than Megadeth's last 3 studio albums: The World Needs A Hero, Risk and Hidden treasures. I thought Megadeth was dead, but it sounds like they're back, with a vengeance! Dave Mustaine has a new lineup which is just as impressive as their classic lineup, awesome shredding guitar solos, gut busting drum beats and punchy bass lines make this album the best one of this year. My favourite songs are Blackmail the universe, Kick the chair and Die dead enough. Puts Metallica's St. Anger to shame.

5.0 out of 5 stars A megadeth album as good as any, 25 Sep 2004
I've been listening to Megadeth since Peace Sells... and I can't believe that Dave has come up with this album. It sounds like a contemporary version of Peace Sells. The Chris Poland solos are very noticable (and enjoyable), but the song writing is just very NOW!

If this album had come out 15 years ago, Megadeth and maybe not Metallica would be sitting atop the metal pedastal. Die Dead Enough is a metal pop song par excellence.

Within his own genre (cause Megadeth music has always been recognisably Dave, even the rock years) this is an outstanding album. It is as breathtaking in its time as Peace Sells, or Rust.... in fact, if Dave wasn't 40+ this album would probably have had a massive impact on modern (sorry, nu) metal.

If you want to hear speed / thrash they way they made it in the 80s, buy this record. Thats the best compliment that one can give....
