Product Description

CD Description

Legendary "daisy age" rap trio return with their eighth studio album. Finding a home on the increasingly ubiquitous Sanctuary label, they have assembled an eclectic team of producers and guest vocalists including Madlib, Jay Dee, Spike Lee, Flava Flav, Carl Thomas, Ghostface, Common and MF Doom. The result is a clever and stylish underground rap record thatnever resorts to cliche and takes a chance to poke a fingerof fun at the crunk and bling excesses of modern hip hop.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another chapter in the De La Soul mystery, 15 Dec 2004
The career of De La Soul is one of the great mysteries of hip-hop. How can a band who continue to produce such extraordinary work be so ignored? How can a band who have refined their sound so many times still be known for their Daisy Age debut? How can hip hop of this quality not sell in its millions when so much second rate bilge does just that?

Perhaps it's that the De La boys are grown up and their lyrical and musical complexity is too mature a prospect for the average hip hop afficionados. Perhaps their tough stance on the parlous state of hip hop is too hard to digest. I don't know.

What I do know is that they have produced yet another brilliant, subtle, smart, witty, funky classic and that it's being totally ignored. Along with the two AOI albums, they've now been on absolutely peerless form since the late 90s. If there's any justice in the world, hip hop will wake up and give them the respect they deserve.

But there isn't any justice, cos bling sells and this don't. Put this right. Do yourself a favour and jump on the bandwagon. I guarantee that after about 3 listens, it won't be off your player for a long time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Return of the real De La, 8 Oct 2004
I was more than a little hesitant about this release due to the rnb nature of their two AOI albums.
However, after a couple of listens i would say this is definitely a return to form for De La Soul.
The change in production certainly helps with madlib offeirng a couple of great beats and Jay Dilla serving up some superb backing tracks.

The guests also shine with MF Doom in particular performing to his usual high level.

Basically, if you buy this expecting it to be as good as De La's first three albums you will be disappointed. I doubt they will ever reach those heights again, however, this is still a great hip ho album and it's good to see them still producing the goods after 15 years in the business.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hip-Hop originals, 21 Aug 2005
By chaz_k (London) - See all my reviews
Aside from rendering the average uncultured Hip-hop fan speechless (or confused) with metaphors and rhymes that dwarf the mental ages of the average "I have mo' money" sell-out - (50 cent, perhaps); this album also offers a mixed bag of clever beats: Shoomp, The Future and The Grind Date just a few. This truly is a relatively unheard jewel, their quiet success is only proof that their witty and original sound only works with the more thoughtful listener. Forget any magic numbers, De La better themselves with each new album.
