Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Working with Blur on their Think Tank album clearly made an impact on Norman Cook. Palookaville, his fourth outing as cartoon dance hero Fatboy Slim, has a distinctly beatnik theme running through it. It also relies more on real instruments and proper songs, rather than Cook's laptop and fun floor fillers, swapping instant thrills for something longer lasting. That said it's unmistakably a Fatboy Slim record, and a pretty phenomenal one at that.

The trademark beach party anthems are still there. The Latino shake of "Wonderful Night", "El Bebe Masoquista"'s electro-funk and single "Slash Dot Dash" with its snarling surf guitar all prove that there's life in Bigbeat yet. But it's the mellower tracks that stand-up to constant rewinds. "North West Three", a dreamy twilight tune dedicated to wife Zoe Ball, is a gorgeously romantic swayer and plinky hobo ditty "Put It Back Together" delivers a ramshackle shot of optimism in the Think Tank style, complete with a drowsy Damon Albarn. Meanwhile, "Long Way From Home"--the moody sub-bass rumble from the O2 ad--and road movie rocker "Push and Shove" find the middle ground and demonstrate that Cook's imagination is as active as ever.

All the usual cut'n'paste musical bric-a-brac's there. All the wackiness and cool grooves remain. It's just that this time they sound just as good in the living room as they do on the dance-floor. --Dan Gennoe

CD Description

'Palookaville' distances itself from the ambient chillout sound of Norman Cook's 2000 release, 'Somewhere Between..' and returns to the trip hop, rock influenced sound of his breakthrough album 'You've Come A Long Way Baby'. Featuring realinstruments where previously samples were used, the album includes collaborations with artists such as Bootsy Collins and Lateef. Though based in trip hop the album also takes influence from rap, country and punk and even includes a Steve Miller cover.

4.0 out of 5 stars A mixed bag..., 24 Oct 2004
"Palookaville" had recieved some mixed reviews here in Denmark, so I was a little sceptical about buying this. Then I listened to all the audio samples of the album that they have on amazon.com. I liked what I heard and finally bought the CD.

I'm a big fan of Norman Cook's earlier work. I produce electronic music myself, and have allways found Cook's music very inspiring. In my book, he's a creative genius! So how good is his new album?

"Don't Let the Man Get You Down" is classic Fatboy Slim. This track could have been on "You've Come a Long Way Baby", it's that good! Rating: 5/5

"Slash Dot Dash" is a bit annoying and is my least favorite track on the CD. I don't like the main sample very much. Rating: 2/5

"Wonderful Night" has got a really nice groove and some nice breaks. Rating 4/5

"Long Way From Home" sounds like something from "From the Gutters to the Stars". It's a bit of a filler. Rating: 3/5

"Put It Back Together", has got some really good samples in it, and good singing to. The bass playing is really good here! There's a break here that really lifts the whole track to another level. It's the high point of the album! Rating: 5/5

"Me Bebé Masoquista" is a bit of a mess and points in too many directions. Still, it's got some catching samples and breaks. Rating: 3/5

"Push and Shove" is another filler. Rating: 3/5

"North West Three" starts with some atmospheric strings and has got a really good main sample. Again, I like the bass here. Rating 4/5

"The Journey", again, some really good samples. This track really showcases Cook's talent for bringing together samples to create something new and special. The singing is also very good. Rating: 5/5

"Jin Go Lo Ba" has got a great intro and brings out the party animal in Fatboy Slim once again. Much better than "Slash Dot Dash". Rating: 4/5

"Song for Chesh" has got a nice intro and bass playing. Very original. Rating: 5/5

"The Joker" is the last track, and is a "feel-good" track and cover that rounds of the album very well. Rating: 4/5

"Palookaville" is a bit of a mixed bag. There are some great moments here, like "Don't Let the Man Get You Down" and "Put it Back Together", but there are also some fillers here that brings the overall impression down. I don't think this record will appeal to the big public masses like "You've Come a Long Way Baby", but Fatboy fans should not miss it! There are some really great moments here, like the intro to "Jin Go Lo Ba" or the string sample from "Song for Chesh".

Overall rating: 4/5

4.0 out of 5 stars A mixed bag, but still very good, 2 Sep 2005
By B. Broadribb (Wimbledon, England) - See all my reviews

A very good album, but not one that I regularly choose to listen to all the way through. There are some Fatboy Slim classics - Don't Let The Man Get You Down, North West Three and the marvellous cover of The Joker being three of the standout tracks. Then there are those which are just great music, such as Song For Chesh, Long Way From Home and Wonderful Night. The majority of the album falls into this category in fact. But there are some tracks that are good but you just won't want to listen to too often. Jin Go Lo Ba and Mi Bebe Masoquista fall into this category for me. Slash Dot Dash also suffered from having to be redone at the last minute, as the original voice sample Norman Cook used was a lot more appealing and generally less grating and annoying than the one he had to opt for. Overall there are no bad tracks, but some have a lot more lasting appeal than others. Definitely Fatboy Slim's weakest album but still very good nonetheless.

4.0 out of 5 stars Comfort Food For Fatboy Fans, 13 Oct 2004
By D. Jeffery "djfresh" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Norman Cook, aka Fatboy Slim, has been quoted as saying he is 'comfortable' with this album - he usually hates his records once he has finished creating them. As a single word description of an album, this is pretty apt.

More live instruments and celebrity collaboraters and vocalists give this album more rounded edges and feelgood factor than the previous Fatboy albums and at the same time I think a little bit less raw excitement. There are no tracks which would make you jump on the dance floor at the first few bars, but (a few swear words apart) you wouldn't mind your kids listening to it - in fact mine are singing the sample from "Don't Let The Man Get You Down" right now!

I personally can't get Bootsie Collins's vocals from "The Joker" out of my head - several people have been surprised by me telling them I love their peaches and can I shake their tree! Altogether a 'slow burner' that I have been listening to every day and getting into more each time.
