Product Description

CD Description

Since his soulful, slowed-down version of the Beatles' "With a Little Help from My Friends" put him on the pop-music map, Joe Cocker has been particularly savvy in choosing outstanding material. HEART & SOUL (2005) proves Cocker's uncanny knack for picking listener favorites--and ones that suit hisdistinctively rugged, raspy voice, no less--hasn't diminished over time. Contemporary rock-radio classics take the lion's share of the set here, with an exception made for Leiber & Stoller (Cocker's stirring rendition of "I [Who Have Nothing]" is particularly notable).
The emotional depth and pathos inherent in U2's "One" and R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts" are perfect vehicles for the singer's impassioned approach and sandpaper pipes, and Cocker makes every pause and melodic nuance count with his gut-wrenching delivery. John Lennon's "Jealous Guy" and Paul McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed"--two post-Beatles classics--are dusted off and given fine readingshere. His versions of "What's Going On" and "Chain of Fools" effectively go toe-to-toe with the definitive versions by Marvin Gaye and Aretha Franklin, respectively. Cocker holds up admirably, and, in the end, turns in one of his most satisfying releases in years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Mighty Set From Joe, 30 Sep 2004
By B. A. E. Jansen (Ruislip) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I remember Barbara Dixon once saying she could listen to Joe singing "Three Blind Mice", and I am firmly in that camp. So what has the great man come up with this time? Well all covers - well chosen and beautifully executed. Lets face it Joe grabs hold off a song and wrings it out like a tea towel. Here you get everything from stuff previously recorded by Aretha to Rose Royce to Shirley Bassey. Jeffrey Vanston assembles a real musicians who's who on this - guitarists include Clappo, Beck, Lukather, Skunk Baxter. If I am picky produciton mebbe a little over elaborate at times, and for me the standout is James Taylor's "Don't Let Me Be Lonely" - with just CJ himself backing Joe - this is as spine tingling as Joe's treatment of Stevie Wonders "You and I" or Randy Newman's " Every Time It Rains" from past albums. There is an unbelievable unaccompanied intro to Screamin Jay Hawkins "Put a Spell" and the falsetto is still there - used to stunning effect on McCartneys "Maybe I'm Amazed". The man may have turned 60, but the voice is as strong as ever, and his interpretations of other people's stuff remains unbelievably imaginative. Don't hesitate, buy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars With a little help from his friends..., 5 Nov 2009
By G. E. Harrison (Cheltenham) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Don't expect any new departures from Joe here, he does what he has always done - tasteful interpretations of other people's songs and in this case does them very well. Production by Jeffrey Vanston is crisp and modern, with Joe's distinctive voice bringing character and drive to every song.

It's a great selection of songs from classic soul oldies like Aretha's "Chain of fools" and Chuck Jackson's wonderful "I keep forgetting" to more modern soulful songs like U2's "One" and REM's "Everbody hurts", with Joe taking them all in his stride. And although there isn't a classic Beatles cover this time he does nice versions of both McCartney's "Maybe I'm amazed" and Lennon's "Jealous guy". I'm not that keen on the song "I who have nothing" but Joe does a very emotional version enlivened by restrained lead guitar by Jeff Beck. Eric Clapton also plays fantastic blues guitar on Joe's version of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I'll put a spell on you" and elsewhere guitarists Steve Lukather and Jeff Baxter also guest, along with violin player Jerry Goodman (remember him?). All-in-all this is a really great sounding record.
