4.5 STARS!! FABULOUS Finian's Rainbow CD - 1968 Movie SDTRK, 13 Jul 2005
Although this Finian's Rainbow (1968 - Warner Bros. (U.S.)) movie soundtrack cd from Rhino Handmade is now out of print stateside, if this movie ever meant anything at all to you, PLEASE do yourself a HUGE favor and track down a copy, if at all possible.
The sound reproduction is SPECTACULAR (STUNNINGLY CLEAR and BEAUTIFUL!) and the music itself is WONDERFUL! Personally, I always felt that this particular score was never given the accolades it TRULY deserved, probably due to the fact that this movie was released just as the great hollywood movie musical was on life-support, soon to gasp it's last, dying breath!
Simply one of the GREAT, UNDERRATED movie soundtracks of the 60's, if not all time!
Okay, maybe I'm getting a bit carried away writing this review as I listen to the music again (and again, and again), but let's look at the facts:
The first time this soundtrack has been made available on cd in it's entiretly, from a movie directed by no less than Francis Ford Coppola (Granted, never to be known as one of the great movie musical directors, but he certainly had NOTHING to be ashamed of with this film and soon to become a world-class director, thanks to his work on a certain little film about the mob, that you might say drew just a BIT of attention back in 1972!).
Petula Clark, the pop songbird at the peak of her vocal talent. JUST AWESOME!! Enough said!
Fred Astaire. The man was just crossing into his seventies when he made this movie, yet was still as graceful on-screen as no human being before, or since. Simply put, a man BORN to dance. And though he would never set the world on fire with his singing abilities, he carries his own weight here with the same elegance and class he was known for throughout his career.
Don Francks. Like the movie he starred in, little-seen, underrated, yet fabulous! This guy had a good set of pipes on him and did a ton of (mostly) tv and film work, yet remains to this day an unknown talent! (And yes, still acting today well into HIS seventies.).
I was eight years old when I originally saw this movie in 1968. A typical, American kid who wasn't much interested in movie musicals, but this one has really stuck with me through the years.
If anything here piques your interest, then RUN, don't WALK, and please track down the Finian's Rainbow soundtrack cd from RhinoHandmade (heck, if the cd isn't available at a reasonable price, find a copy of the original, old vinyl soundtrack lp and dust-off your old phonograph player!) or better yet, pick-up the movie itself (Which is (finally!) available on DVD.). You won't be sorry!
