The Blue Nile, I would never., 20 Sep 2004
The previous Blue Nile single "Happiness" released on the 23rd of September 1996 was a mile stone in their career since this time bands have formed and disbanded, music styles have come and gone but the The Blue Nile have stayed constant. The last single "Happiness"; parts one and two have gone onto become highly collectable as they both contained outtakes from their third album "Peace at Last".The same can be said of this release, it has a cover with a pictorial reference to their second album "Hats" and with the inclusion of the very first tracks put out by the band," I love this life / the second act which did not appear on their debut album "A walk across the rooftops". This too will become highly sought after item by collectors of this trio from Glasgow. Paul Buchanan for this single "I would never" has written another trademark love song which has him singing heartfelt lyrics with great feeling and soul, opening line of "I have walked a thousand miles, I have worked as fast as I can, and I have raised our precious child" he proclaims a deep emotion that only a man can feel for his family, once again the Blue Nile have taken something so ordinary and made something majestic out of it. The song itself has all the usual Blue Nile elements, rich string arrangements and a very emotive chorus, and "does anybody know me?" a question we all ask of ourselves. "I would never" is a late night, sit down and chill out track, a euphoric experience for all.

Well I never, 27 Aug 2004
Disclaimer: unliker a number of the "reviewers" of the forthcoming album, I have actually heard this."I Would Never" is a fine if not phenemonal return from the Blue Nile. It is much closer in sound to "Peace At Last" than "Hats" or "A Walk Across The Rooftops", with Paul Buchanan's weary tones sounding initially a bit too close to acts like Del Amitri or Deacon Blue for comfort. However, despite its simplicity, the song is a grower and worthy of your listen. The accompanying tracks "I Love This Life" and "The Second Act" were the band's first ever single from over 20 years ago. The fact that they are used is indication of the Blue Nile's lack of productivity. However, given that many fans will not have heard them, and the band's smallness of output is one of their defining characteristics, this is not a problem especially given the magnificence of both songs. The rub is that their strength rather diminishes the qualities of "I Would Never". Still I wait with bated breath for the album and, for the time being, I would never turn my back on my love for this band.

The Blue Nile return...., 26 Aug 2004
I Would Never is a typically gorgeous song from the upcoming longplayer follow-up to 1996's Peace at Last, High (free copies are more than welcome!!!). I rarely buy singles, but this one is a must as it comes with the rare 1981 debut single from The Blue Nile, I Love This Life/The Second Act, which is very much a prequel to A Walk Across the Rooftops (1983) & will go down well with Mackenzie/Rankine-Associates fans and admirers of Scott Walker. An obligatory single from a band who don't release much, but when they do, you know it matters...
