The first two Hollies albums reveal a band, who, like most of their contemporaries, began by concentrating on r&b covers. The 'Stay' album features just one self-penned song. They were already employing three-part harmonies, and here they sound enthusiastic but wayward. Significantly, the harmonies are at their best on 'It's Only Make Believe', pointing the way toward a more pop-oriented direction. Some of the rhythm and blues is impressive, particularly their version of Chuck berry's 'Talkin' 'Bout You', but most of it, particularly another Berry cover, 'Memphis', indicates that they couldn't compete in this area with the likes of The Rolling Stones, Manfred Mann, The Yardbirds or The Animals. Theirs was a lighter, more Beatlesque sound.

'In The Hollies Style' is a big leap forward. Half of the songs are their own and are fairly impressive, particularly 'To You My Love' and 'Come On Home'. Also, as a unit, they sound tighter, though yet another Berry cover, 'Too Much Monkey Business', confirms that r&b wasn't the way forward. This CD is a worthwhile buy if you like their other recordings, but isn't the best place to start.
