I think this item is fine and well worth the money - it isn't up there with the absolute best, but it isn't hundreds of pounds either. A good system at a good price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad entry level system, 28 Oct 2004
I've been a movie/DVD goer for years and i've alway enjoyed watching my movie the best way i could. i've had my Video/DVD player plugged in my home stereo for years and thought the sound from that was good enough for me, but i was wrong! having decided to buy this cheap cinema kit i thought it would be pretty rubbish and i would go back to my trusty home stereo, NO WAY AM I DOING THAT!!! This system has brought my DVDs to life. I never thought something as cheap as this would be any good but it is. As this is only a entry level system i can only imagine what a top of the range sytem would sound like. The sound from Starlogics system is quite clear, voices are heard very clearly from the centre and ambient sound from all the others is good too. The first film i watch when i set this up was Lord of the rings 1. i sat there in front of my widescreen tv with a big smile as the battle at the beginning rage around me. this purchase is well worth it if you are looking for a good 5.1 on a budget. buy this, set it up and relax in the knowlegde that this was £50 well spent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunningly good value., 17 Nov 2004
By A Customer
The picture quality is only passable and breaks up from time to time. I wouldn't recommend it for a large screen but for a smallish TV it's fine. It seems to get slightly worse with region 1 discs but that may just be the ones I tried.

The sound quality on the other hand is excellent (considering the price). You could easily spend double the amount on just a basic set of 5.1 speakers. The numerous helicopter scenes in Apocalypse Now Redux sound fantastic, I'm sure other scenes that make good use of surround sound also sound great. A massive step up from a TV's built in speakers.

It seems to take a very long time to load menus on some region 1 discs. Again this is possibly just the discs I was using. There seems to be no problem with region 2 discs. The Video CD playback works well on the two discs I have tried.

The unit looks nice- a lot nicer than most budget DVD players. The area that appears black on the amazon photo actually has a far nicer chrome finish. The main remote control is good (and looks quite like those all in one remotes) with lots of useful features like a "goto" button- nearly instantly go to any chapter, time etc. on the disc. The speaker remote also works well.

This really is a fantastic bargain at only ten pounds more than a basic player without the 5.1 speakers. You need to get a scart cable but you can pick one of these up for a few pounds (I got a gold plated RGB one for about 3 pounds from an auction site)
