Good batteries, but very basic charger, 27 Sep 2004

I bought this package to provide power for a digital camera. The supplied batteries are of a very good specification, perfectly adequate for the task in hand, but it is the charger which lets the package down. According to the instructions, it takes 18 hours to recharge these batteries, there is no indicator to tell you when charging has finished, and you are instructed to turn off the charger as soon as the 18 hours have been completed, to avoid overcharging, and thus damaging, the batteries. Other, more expensive, chargers are much quicker at charging (some doing the same job in under 2 hours), indicate when the batteries are fully charged, and switch themselves off automatically. I like to recharge my batteries overnight when I'm on holiday so that I have a fully charged set for the following day's shooting. With this package, you can't do this due to the lengthy charging cycle, and you'd have to make sure that whenever you set the charger charging, you'd be there 18 hours later to switch it off again! Given the low price of this package, perhaps I'm being unfair in my assessment, but I didn't realise that chargers could be this slow (shame on Amazon for not including a proper description) and I wish that I'd paid a bit more and got a more sophisticated charger.
