5.0 out of 5 stars Best in its class!, 22 Feb 2005
By gid (London, UK) - See all my reviews

I highly recommend this camera to anyone wanting quality on a budjet. I put off buying a digital camera for a long time because everybody I knew who had one could only take a few pictures before the battery ran dead. The battery life on the DX7440 is brilliant - I took hundreds of pictures with flash before battery ran out. You can also buy the larger battery for £15 which lasts even longer.

4 mega-pixels is about what you need to get excellent printable photos. I'd recommend you buy a 512Mb SD card - will give you about 400 photos on top quality. The bigger card you get the less often you have to change it so splash out first time round.

And to my surprise, the free camera bag is excellent - good quality and fits the camera perfectly with space for spare battery and memory cards. You can even fit the charger in there if you are going away.

I can't recommend this camera enough, I feel lucky to have found it for such a good price on amazon - you won't get better than this for your money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great optics & image quality, great featureset, great camera, 9 Jan 2005
I spent ages evaluating 100s of digital cameras and reading magazine and online reviews before deciding to take the plunge and buy the Kodak DX7440. The Kodak name isn't quite as prestigious as Canon, Nikon etc, but with the DX7440 you aren't just buying a name badge, you're buying a well developed camera that leaves the competition trailing behind.

The DX7440 has a brilliant 4x optical zoom (+ 4x digital zoom), really fast autofocus and it records video too (limited only by memory card capacity). The image quality is fantastic.

Being picky, I'd say a protective LCD cover would be useful (as with most other digital cameras). Also, the need to reset the date/time every time the battery is re-inserted after charging can be annoying, although this is no doubt part of Kodak's master plan to get us to buy a docking station or printer dock, which avoids having to remove the battery to recharge it.

Overall, I am very pleased with this camera and would recommend it to others (along with the Kingmax Platinum 1gb SD card).

5.0 out of 5 stars Kodak Easyshare DX7440 - Feature Rich Camera, 7 Oct 2004
IFirst impression is that the camera is fairly large in comparison to others currently in the market. But I think this is good and fits quite nicely in my palm to be able to take pictures with one hand. It has a plastic body but looks and feels quite solid. I invested in the Kodak 'small' camera bag for this camera but be warned the 'small' bag is quite LARGE in comparison. Actually too bulky. My fault for not checking it out on the high streets.

Like the LS633 the DX7440 also has a 2.2 inch screen and just makes it easier to view and review those shots. Mind you it is not an OLED screen so you cannot view the picture at the acute angles as you can with the OLED. There is a 9 times magnification on review. There is also a nice hefty 32MB internal memory with allowance for expanding by upto 512MB using SD/MMC card.

I like the jog dial 'lock' on the camera. I have previously encountered on other Kodak cameras that you could inadvertently move the dial to switch 'on' the camera and drain the battery, or damage the lens.

With regards to the picture quality, I am still in the early stages and I have had mixed bag. One of the reasons I bought the camera is that the DX7440 has a low light sensor capable of accurate focusing in low light situation. I have previously found with Kodak cameras is that the focusing system falls over under low light situations. Not a problem with Canons with AIAF. I have yet to test this out.

The Schneider-KREUZNACH VARIOGON 4x Optical lens gives you a good wide angle to telephoto, 33mm - 132mm (compact equivalent).

The video recording is quite impressive, alowing you to record 640x480 with sound at 13fps and 320x240 with sound at 24fps. Again, video recording duration only limited by size of available memory.

I am not going to comment on the Easyshare software but the version 4.0 (latest) is much more improved than its predecessors.

All in all, I am quite pleased with my purchase and would recommend the camera to both novices and pros as the camera has good Auto and preset Sceneries and nice Manual controls. No Panoramic though!!

Steve's Digicams has a review on this camera. Worth looking up if you are seriously considering purchase.

My own observation is that the DX7440 is actually replacing the DX6440 (camera I really wanted but now costs £200!!). And the DX7440 looks like is being supercede by the DX7630 (6 MP). Just bear in mind that Large MP means you need large size memory cards to hold decent number of shots at the highest quality.
