Amazing value, 31 Dec 2004
When you look at the price of this little machine, you ask yourself the one, essential question: why do you want a phone? There are considerably more expensive models on the market which will link you to the Internet, take photos of the guy sitting next to you in the bus or at the bar, play tunes, and, who knows, maybe do your laundry and vacuum your stairs. The trouble with all the more expensive versions is that they seem to be more about posing than function.I have a simple requirement in a mobile phone - when I am out and about and know that I will have to keep in contact with other people, I carry a phone with me ... and try not to use it. Most of the time it stays at home. When I want to talk to people, I do that, I talk to real people, face-to-face. I'm a keen photographer - when I want to take pictures, I use a camera. I make as little use of the phone as is humanly possible ... and given that we didn't have these devices until a couple of years ago, I assure you, it is physically and emotionally possible to go for minutes without needing to use the phone! If you require a simple, straightforward, no frills, functional, accessible, and eminently useful phone for yourself or your kids, I don't think there's a better bargain on the market. Price is usually inextricably linked not just to the outlay on the handset you buy, but the cost of the phonecalls you make. While this is as cheap as mobiles get, if you spend hours on the phone each day, you may find a more expensive one offers you a better deal with charges, longterm. If you simply make the odd call and need something reassuring to carry in a pocket or bag - in case you get delayed, lost, the car breaks down, you're out late, etc. - then the Sagem has to offer outstanding value. As I say, it won't get you on the Internet, it apparently won't download any of those annoying ring tones, and it won't vacuum your stairs - I tried, it refuses! But it comes ready to use, the battery recharges fine, paying for credits is easy, the instruction manual is accessible, the controls are clunky enough to be excellent if your eyesight is not the greatest and your fingers not that dexterous, it works, the quality of sound reproduction is just fine. Oh, and it works. What more can I say? For an eminently functional, economic phone, you probably won't do better. I work part-time as a freelance writer - it works for me!
