Synopsis

THE BATTLE OF THE SEXES is a witty black comedy from Ealing comedy director Charles Crichton. The House of MacPherson has been supplying Scottish tweeds for years--its weavers make the tweed in their homes on the Scottish islands, and the staff sells it in the company's Edinburgh premises. When Old MacPherson (Ernest Thesiger) dies, his son, Young MacPherson (Robert Morley), takes over and brings in an efficiency expert. That's bad enough, but worse, the expert is a woman and, even worse than that, she is an American woman. Horrors. The staff, led by Mr. Martin (Peter Sellers), is aghast. The expert Angela Barrows (Constance Cummings) begins to organise, to streamline, and to make plans to update the company's manufacturing methods. Young MacPherson is entranced--seduced by the idea of becoming famous for his soon-to-be-implemented revolutionary manufacturing methods. However, the ever-deferential Mr. Martin discovers unexpected levels of cunning as he pits his wits against the brash American. THE BATTLE OF THE SEXES is crisply directed by Charles Crichton, with a witty script by Monja Danischewsky, based on a James Thurber story. And Peter Sellers gives a fine performance as the shy, inhibited Mr. Martin, who turns out to be an extraordinary schemer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little film, 28 April 2006
By David K. Barnes - See all my reviews

Not quite sure what the other reviewer is referring to when he talks about the supposedly terrible DVD quality; maybe he had a dud copy, as my one is pretty sharp and well transferred, and certainly not just a few "well lit faces in inky blackness". It's not particularly flash but for a budget title you can't complain. Again, perhaps he/she had a dodgy disc.

As for the film itself, Sellers is fantastic and Robert Morley provides firm comic back up in this rather majestic "little comedy" which only gets marks deducted for its bizarre "battle of the sexes" spin, which only comes to the fore in a couple of voiceovers (particularly a horrendously sexist "a woman's tears...") and the title itself. The battle here is for traditional values v. modern industrialisation, and the fact that the one who wants to modernise the fibre business is a woman should be neither here nor there. Bit misleading, that.

Still, a fun little movie and certainly worth a fiver. 8/10

2.0 out of 5 stars Black comedy, indeed, 26 Jan 2006
By John Verity (South Orange, NJ) - See all my reviews

2 stars because of the bad image quality:
I just received this disk from acros the ocean and, with high hopes, plunked it into the DVD player for a quick spin. Alas, the image quality is dismal; whoever transferred this from film to digital did a pathetic job. Most of every frame is completely black, with no detail visible. In many scenes, all one sees is a couple of failry well-lit faces floating around in a sea of inky darkness. Very disappointing. Too bad, too, because it is obviously a smart and entertaining film - and one that here, in the US of A, we don't hear much about, even us Sellers fans. So, Odyssey, or whoever you are, how about another try at digitizing this title? Shame on you for trying to pass off this wretched one off as a faithful copy.
