4.0 out of 5 stars Chessmaster?, 27 Oct 2004
I have used many versions of Chessmaster over the years, and this is definately the best version made by them.

As said in an earlier review this game is suitable for players up to the club level (like myself) and will help improve your play through the different training aspects of the game. However, if you are looking for a good game engine which is much more realistic, the Fritz range of chess software is much better. It also includes many features such as a free subscription to PlayChess.com which lets you play against real players over the internet using a much better interface than that of the online element of the Chessmaster games.

Basically if you are looking for a chess engine which will improve you game, play against varying difficulty levels and are not put off by the slight lack of realism of the playing styles then get this game. But if you are looking for a playing engine with a good online element, go for the Fritz range.

4.0 out of 5 stars Buy this and Fritz, 30 Sep 2005
By A Customer
For those who've never heard of Fritz, Chessmaster is undoubtedly the best program on the market. It will teach you the basics plus quite a bit more and offer you lots of different 'people' to play against. Yes, I agree with the reviewer above, they do not play humanly, but no chess program does.

Chessmaster's other great plus is that it doesn't take itself too seriously, there are animated boards to keep kids interested and everything looks colourful and bright. There's also free online play.

If you have heard of Fritz that probably means you've been playing longer, know a bit more and therefore will find its database and analysis functions more useful than Chessmaster's plusses. Fritz is FAR more user friendly for this sort of thing.

I disagree that Chessmaster is only good at full strength. Its engine is rated at over 2700, so unless you're a super grandmaster I'd say the lower levels might also challenge you a bit.

All in all the two programs do different things very well. Look out for Fritz 9, though, which I believe will also include a lot of tutorial material.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, 30 Sep 2004

As someone who greatly enjoyed the previous incarnation (Chessmaster 9000) it's good to get this version which improves and develops what has gone before.

The training element alone is worth the price. I'm working my way through Josh W's Academy, and his passion and love for the game shines through and is utterly infectious. A great way to learn. There's also a new 'Attacking Chess' series of lessons, plus all the excellent tutorials presented on previous versions.

There's a new fun version with animated pieces, and a greatly improved interface.

From the perspective of someone learning to love the game, this is thoroughly recommended.
