I have only caught up with this modern English composer with this, the cd of his final symphony. Actually it seems like a good place to start. The symphony is an intriguing work, which while clearly influenced by Beethoven, Sibelius, occupies its own individual sound and rhythmic world, large scale yet rhymically taut, and with an enigmatic quality, which the ending in particular brings out. It's as if the forces of creation are unleashed by a scientist/deity who then gets bored and gets rid of his evolving sound-world with a casual, almost jokey "flick of the hand" (Simpson's own analogy, as the booklet informs us). The Nielson Variations are a lot of fun, so an entertaining cd all round, and one that made me regret that Simpson did not live to complete his projected final choral symphony. Still there are 8 previous symphonies (and a stack of quartets) to explore, all on Hyperion, who on this cd are well up to their usual high standards of presentation and audio quality.
