This recording perhaps ought not to work on me. I am a secular, left-wing gentile with a long-standing fondness for extreme jazz, hardcore punk, some classical music, the occasional mellifluous singer-songwriter, the odd college rock band here and there. This is an unaccompanied recording of an Orthodox Jewish religious service, sung by an all-male choir involving some of the top names in contemporary cantor-ing (if that's a word), recorded as part of a series funded by the phenomenally unpleasant (to any anti-capitalist) Milken brothers, and in any case a bunch of guys singing about a liturgy that I don't believe in.

Nevertheless, because I can listen to J.S. Bach, I can listen to this. The main cantor is Benzion Miller, who has one of the great voices of our time - a powerful, quavery instrument that will work on anyone who is willing to go for the kind of full-throated emotionalism that is this kind of singing at its best. I defy anyone with an ear to listen to 'Hattei' and not be deeply stirred. I have no idea what they're singing about, but it's absolutely gripping and compelling listening. I love the Klezmatics and Hadag Nadash and Ofra Haza as much as anyone else, but this is just a phenomenally powerful piece of music-making. So what if Elliot Milken, brother of junk-bond king Michael, paid for it? It's still a treasure. You won't always want to listen to it, but when you do it's worth it. And bargain-priced, too.
