3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite Shogun but worth a look!, 6 Mar 2007
By Robert Mark Chapman "nobiwan" (London) - See all my reviews

I have not read the book on which this film is based so can not comment on how accurately the story has been told to the original, so please take this review on face value.

The story is set in the early opium trading days between England and china, set around the central character Dirk Struan the owner of a wealthy trading and shipping company played by Brian Brown, being at the top can only lead to rivals wanting to see his demise. The story is filled with action, conspiracy, murder, and some sex too!

The film is a visual feast and shot well, most of the acting is good, all in all well worth a view.

1.0 out of 5 stars A total disappointment, 2 Mar 2009
By Mr. K. W. Taylor "keitht" (Cornwall,) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The book by James Clavell is an excellent International Best Seller. It is a wonderful and intriguing story. Sadly this DVD is an embarrassment which has not managed to transfer from a book to the screen. It does not convey the excitement which is in the book. It is not in the same league as Shogun, but should be. It has a good opening with music and you then hope for that standard to be kept up, but sadly it falls away into total boredom. I felt sorry for the actors who seemed to be acting in a Village Panto.
A great story totally ruined by poor scripts and filmwork.
If you must watch this film, it will probably be shown at about 4AM on TV.
Save your money and watch Shogun again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad joss!, 24 Jul 2009
By fifi-m (scotland) - See all my reviews
This is an appallingly awful B movie -laughable caricature accents of the most clunky dialogue, wooden acting, one dimensional cartoon characters, gaudy sets offering absolutely no sense of place, poorly explained, disjointed storylines - a real stinker for 2hours 7 minutes. The whole production reeks of "bad joss" (bad luck/karma in the local parlance). It must have been obvious to everyone involved, by final edit (if not well before), that this was a complete turkey. It is certainly "bad joss" for the audience!
