This set consists of the settings of folk material that Beethoven made for Scot publisher George Thompson. Like all such works, they were intended for domestic performance. However, Beethoven's arrangements were too difficult for amateur performance and the scores sold poorly.

Performed by professionals, however, they come alive. Whilst they may not be exactly central Beethoven repertoire, they are hugely enjoyable and the cast on this set (11 singers and 5 accompanists) turn in delightful performances. Recorded in 1996/1997 for the DG Complete Beethoven edition, they have now been repackaged in a tasteful slim box. The sound quality is impeccable, with a suitable intimacy. The booklet has been cut-down but is still informative. Those who want more detail should be able to find it on the 'net without much difficulty.

All in all a lovely collection and well worth the investment.
