5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, 5 Sep 2004
By Michael Mouse (Leeds, UK) - See all my reviews

There are very few films that are made all the more powerful by the score. Gattaca and The Piano are two obvious choices of previous examples, and I'm paying a big compliment to James Newton Howard by mentioning his score for The Village in the same breath as those.

This score added SO much depth to the film. I know the film got very mixed reviews but I for one thought it was superb, and this score was an essential ingredient.

Listening to it as a standalone piece of work is occassionally difficult (some tracks are particularly eerie - 'The Bad Color' and 'Those We Do Not Speak Of' are down right unsettling), but most of the time a sheer delight.

As with much of Michael Nyman's scores (Gattaca, The Piano etc), The Village score uses repetition of key themes in many of the tracks, although rather than being 'repetitive' helps join the individual pieces - a simple trick that isn't done very well in the majority of film scores.

There are lots of exquisite compositions here - 'Noah Visits', 'The Gravel Road' and 'The Vote' are my personal favourites.

If you love beautifully played strings then check this out (and if you enjoyed the film, you'd be surprised how much of that enjoyment can be relived hearing this).

5.0 out of 5 stars Touching and mysterious....just like the film, 26 Aug 2004
James Newton Howard really outdoes himself this time. The soundtrack to "Signs", while capturing the spirit of the film, was rather boring with the usual tense string moments and very little else. "The Village", however, is less like a thriller soundtrack and more like a poetical representation of the movie. There are still elements of "scare value", but the main theme is, to my mind, aching beautiful and reminded me somewhat of Einaudi's works. Definatly worth buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!, 20 Jun 2005
By A Customer
I can't quite put into words just how brilliant this soundtrack is but I'm going to try! I watched the movie as I am a fan of Night's work and was so absorbed by it and the soundtrack that i went out immediately and bought both! The soundtrack is an amazing piece of work that stands alone so well but adds so mmuch to the movie as well. You can hear the terror that the villagers felt and the love that blossomed between the main characters. The violin tugs at your heart and is so well played by someone so young. If you haven't got this soundtrack and the movie I really can't understand why!
