Synopsis

This first volume of CRIME STORY features the complete first series of 20 episodes plus the original feature-length pilot--directed by Abel Ferrara (BAD LIEUTENANT) and produced by Michael Mann (HEAT, MIAMI VICE). The subsequent television crime drama series has become a cult favourite.
The pilot episode sets the scene: Set in 1963 Chicago, the story centres around a duel between tough cop Mike Torello (Dennis Farina) and slick, ambitious young mobster Ray Luca (Anthony John Denison). As the bullets fly and Luca's lawyer makes sure nothing sticks to his client, Torello descends into a moral abyss, using any dirty tricks he can to bring about the justice that the system doesn't seem to care about. He also grows insanely jealous of his neglected wife (Darlanne Fluegel) and begins to question his own integrity. The stellar cast features David Caruso, a family friend of Torello's working for Luca; Ted Levine; and a young Julia Roberts. The score is by rocker Todd Rundgren. Realistic performances, rich attention to period detail (including lots of classic rhythm and blues blaring from jukeboxes), beautiful photography, and intense action sequences make CRIME STORY a fine addition to the credits of all concerned. The subsequent TV series (the first series included here) lasted two years and is considered by many to be one of the best cop shows of the 1980s.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally This Classic Is On DVD, 3 Aug 2004
I never thought i would see this day !!

Probably released due to an overview of Michael Mann's career, Anchor Bay once again deliver.

Released straight after the end of Miami Vice, Crime Story takes a completely different direction to it's Florida based relation.

Set in 1960's Chicago, this series focuses on the rise of mob boss Ray Luca (Anthony Dennison) and the efforts of Lt Mike Torello to bring him to justice.

An excellent series with a highly authentic look, excellent storylines and a cool soundtrack played in part by Todd Rungren.

An essential purchase !!

4.0 out of 5 stars Dennis Farina's finest hour, 6 Aug 2006

Worth getting just to see Dennis Farina excel. I think it is realistic (Well how wiould I know, I wasn't in Vegas in the 60's) Can be a bit ludicrous at points like gangsters surviving an atom bomb test, but overall worth the money. Quite fascinating to spot future big stars in supporting roles

5.0 out of 5 stars A TV Classic!, 6 April 2007
I have to admit I'd never even heard of this show until I picked up the DVD's on a whim. As a recent convert to American crime dramas ( C.S.I, Law & Order etc.) I have a lot of catching up to do and this show is probably the cream of the crop! Hailing from the mid 80's, this is a pretty violent show (although a lot of the violence is (semi!)off screen) and this would usually turn me off from watching it but the programme is just so well made with some superb performances from the main actors and great atmosphere. The story follows Lietenant Mike Torello as he persues ruthless gangster Ray Luca from the streets of Chicago to mob run Las Vegas and in the process Luca raises from street punk to crime king-pin.
Set in the 60's the recreation of the period is amazing and overall this is real classic TV. A must see!!
As for the dvd's themselves, unfortunately there are no extras at all (which is a pity as I'd love to have seen interviews with cast members etc)but instead consider that you are getting the pilot episode and 20 episodes of great drama and I don't think anyone will be too disappointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good series - Poor transfer
An interesting and fairly gripping crime show from Michael Mann - particularly when the action focuses on Torello's quarry, Ray Luca, as opposed to the trite domestic scenes. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars A Real Crime
I watched this series in the Eighties when it first aired, and loved it.

The show seemed to work then, but I suppose it's me who's changed. Read more
