Liszt's Sonata in B minor is rightly regarded as one of the pinnacles of piano writing in the nineteenth century. It combines romantic intensity, virtuosic flair and formal complexity in a way which no other composer has since rivalled. It presents formidable technical challenges - although other works by Liszt are, arguably, more fiercesome for the potential performer.

The market place in the Liszt sonata is a crowded one. Yet I can say that Paul Lewis has few equals - this recording is up there with the very best. Lewis' approach is a tribute to his learning under Alfred Brendel and shows a profound musical sensibility at work. The technique is more than secure - at times the playing sounds effortless. But the virtuosity is for a purpose. Each individual note sounds crystal clear, the long phrases in the work are shaped beautifully and the overall architecture of the work is both transparent and comprehensible.

The other works on the disc are devoted to late Liszt and include the mournful works associated with the death of Wagner. In all of these short but intense works Lewis shows a remarkable attention to detail and is successful in creating this unique "late Liszt" sound world which had no precedents and few successors in music. Programming these strange and wonderful works with the great Sonata in B minor serves to highlight a deep continuity within Liszt's life and work. The connections between two ostensibly different sound worlds is, perhaps, the greatest achievement of Lewis on the disc.

I strongly urge all who care for music to give this disc a try. It is unlikely that you will be disappointed.
