Novelty value wears thin quite quickly, 18 Nov 2004
In theory this looks like a great oddball idea - our favourite rock tracks given the hillbilly bluegrass country treatment. It's not entirely new, of course - Bernie Leadon of the Eagles took time out 15 years ago to do something similar, though not to the really heavy metal tracks, under the name of Run C&W, and there's many a cajun band around that likes to dip into the great rock and roll songbook from time to time. This album acts as a compilation of Hayseed Dixie's previous works, devoted to AC/DC and Kiss, and adding in some more mainstream material (Queen, Bad Company, Darkness, and Motorhead's "Ace of Spades") that will be familiar to the UK market, and which do actually work quite well. It's all acoustic, the guitar-picking is accomplished and it sounds as if a good time was being had by all. There are also three original compositions, one of which, "I'm Keeping Your Poop (In A Jar)" is wicked, and only 2mins 20sec long. And therein lies the problem with much of the rest of this album - many of the other tracks go on too long, even if they're only three and a half minutes, due to the relatively monotonous tone of the guitar/banjo/bass combination and the fact that there's not much variation in tempo. The eight and a half minute trudge through "Highway To Hell" quickly palls. I'm not totally disappointed with my purchase, but it's one to dip in to here and there, rather than listen to all the way through, because the novelty quickly wears thin.
